The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Anyone get their wife/girlfriend a home defense pistol? What do you all recommend? She's like 5'2 110 so probably needs something small.

Go to the place with the largest selection of handguns around and have her pick up every 9mm in the place. If it doesn't feel right knock it off the list and move on. Start from there. If you get a small list come back and ask about finalists. If one wins outright and it's from a reputable manufacturer that's probably your guy.

Question for the MAGO crew: I'm trying to "settle in" on three, maybe four 5.56 loads that will serve me across the spectrum of my current and projected needs. In that order, it's Home Defense, Patrol (rural SO), Long Range (out to ~300 yards), and...of course...the Zombies. Right now, I'm on the 55 TAP for HD; Federal 62 JSP (TBBC) for Patrol; IMI 69 SMK for Long Range; and 55 FMJ for SHTF. I have a lot...a lot...of ammo. I'm trying to dial it down to a realistic "Apocalypse Closet" for long-term storage.

And then I just found out that IMI makes a 62 grain FMJ solid that, based on my experience with IMI ammo to this point, really has my attention. FWIW, I am of the opinion that IMI is turning out high-quality ammo. Both of my AR's love it.

So...I'd appreciate some group-think here. If you're been where I am, save me a few bucks and tell me where I'm gonna end up.

Thanks.

IMI is great value and good quality. I have lots of .223/5.56 loads. If I only could have two, The IMI in 69 grain for anything over 100 yards because it's stupid accurate for the money and any M855 for CQB because it's cheap.

Agreed on IMI. So here's where I am for now:

- Keeping the 55 TAP for in-home SD. Don't have to worry about over penetration.
- The Federal 62 JSP (TBBC) backs up the 55 TAP, and is my patrol load. I'll keep as much of this as I can afford, since it's one of the top-rated 5.56 barrier blind rounds.
- The IMI 69 SMK is my long range load. And it's still a solid <100 yd performer.
- And I'm going back to the 62 FMJ for my SHTF load. I'm reminded of Chris Kyle's comments about 64 grains or better. I'll compromise at 62 since it's cheaper.

So I'll gradually shoot my way through my 55 FMJ, and replace it with 62 FMJ as I do.

In short, with the exception of 55 TAP, it's 62+ moving forward. For whatever reason, both of my 6721's love 62-69 grain loads.

Appreciate the input.

It's all about ballistics, GW. I'd check on the 62 grain ballistic gel tests before giving up on the M193 spec stuff. Remember, 193 is designed to tumble and fragment causing more serious wound tracks. Does the 62 grain stuff do the same?

I'm pretty sure that's this stuff

5.56 62GR Federal Tactical Bonded (XM556SBCT3)

and if so I think is GTG. (GW can confirm)

I think I might have been referencing the wrong 62gr load after looking at the post again. If it's the SS109 he's talking about your concerns are valid, though he might want better barrier results than 193. For SHTF and blasting I just look for good deals. (or using handloads)

I was referring to the IMI 62 grain stuff.

Who do you think turned him into the Federal? :p

I've never tried it for that purpose though to some extent that's a bit surprising to me. I know some ranges don't allow it.

It wasn't designed to be barrier blind. It was designed to penetrate Combloc body armor and helmets of the 1970s.

Still not armor piercing though.

And for that I am eternally grateful. And broke.

I'm referring to (or was) the IMI 62 grain FMJ. They show both that and the 62 grain green tip on the IMI website, but after digging deeper, it's the same round. The green tip is a US thing, not a NATO thing. Both rounds have the "NATO cross" stamp.

So...until I find a standard 62-64 grain FMJ that I like, it's the 55 grain FMJ (XM193), of which I currently have a metric butt ton.

My goal is to get in the 62-69 grain range on all of my loads to get (hopefully) similar ballistics regardless of the individual round that happens to be going down the barrel. The Federal 556SBCT is a top-rated BB round, and my default duty load. The accuracy (for me) hovers in the 1 to 2 MOA range, but that's plenty good at my likely engagement range. The IMI 69 SMK is stupid accurate out to 100 yards, which is as far as I've shot it so far. Through a Nikon P-223, at 9X, I've shot a couple of groups where I could have trimmed FDR's whiskers on the dime. Then again, some days I struggle to hit the barn from the inside, so...

Nice to see you back in here, and full of P&V again. I missed that.

No, I still remember the time I "made" you go open your gun safe. I'll take your word for it.

My fortress is simple: .45 ACP and 5.56. Keep it simple, and specific. My Sheriff graciously provides me with all the .40 for my duty weapon that I want, so all I have to worry about is my own guns. You already knew that.

So I keep around 1K rounds of .45, roughly 80/20 split between 230 FMJ and 230 HST.

Right now, I'm at around 5K on 5.56. Maybe a tad over. Just trying to dial it in to a manageable number, and the right rounds. I'll hold on to, and shoot my way through, the 55 FMJ, but I am going to start replacing it with the IMI 62 FMJ. I've come around to the mindset that heavier is probably better, and by staying in the 62-69 envelope, I should get similar ballistics, regardless of load, at anything at or less than 100 yards. Beyond that, the IMI 69 SMK is the choice. If you haven't shot it, get a box. SGAmmo has it. You'll be glad you did.

I'm off my pace here lately, but I average about 300-400 rounds a month just out of my AR's. If I get back on pace, I should have my ammo locker dialed in by the first of the year.

Meanwhile, you keep safe out there in Tornado Alley, ya' heard?

Reminds of when I was in Iraq. We were briefing the general on the status of different things and one of the guys said, without thinking, that a buttload of ammo had arrived in Basra. The general stopped him and asked, with much amusement, how much ammo was in a buttload. Turns out that it was two containers worth. #Armythings

Well... it finally came in.... it’s absolutely fantastic! 6lb double action and 3.5lb single action. Wilson combat knocked it out of the park.

Updated. I wouldn’t do y’all like that lol

Niiice. And I think, for what it is, the CZ75 is underrated. I'd almost no experience with them until a friend showed at the range with one and I shot the hell out of it and liked it very much. That was the full size though. Had a chance to wring out the 01 yet?

I have a full size SP01 and it’s excellent. I literally just got home from my dealer. I’ll post an update later on.
