Does anyone know what percentage of teams improve their record from year-to-year in general? Hard to tell how much a correlation this actually evidences.

Good question. I saw where 12% of the teams had the same record. So you would think normal would be half of the remaining teams going up and half going down (88%/2). So I would think you would compare 44% to the 56%.
