Mitchell (6-foot-3, 285 pounds), from Franklin Road Academy, was busy this past weekend. He was in Knoxville for the Orange & White game on Saturday and spent a wet and soggy Sunday working out at the NIKE Opening regional event in Nashville. “It was a good day, I liked what I got done in the one-on-one’s but I didn’t run a great 40,” Mitchell said of his day. “It was a lot of fun just getting to work against all those guys.”

Few college recruiters have a great deal of interest in Mitchell’s 40-time. What makes him an elite prospect is the ability to wreak havoc in the trenches, something that college coaches can never have enough of. That’s certainly a message that Mitchell has received from Tennessee and he heard it again this weekend while he was in Knoxville. “It was a really good trip. I like it there a lot and it was a great atmosphere for the spring game,” Mitchell said. “I like the staff there, they’ve definitely have made me feel like a priority. I hear from someone at Tennessee, whether it’s coach Pruitt or an assistant everyday.”

Mitchell is a big body for sure, but he also shows some good burst for a big man and is simply a load to move off of his spot. It’s not hard to envision him growing into the type of player that would be at home in the middle of Pruitt’s 3-4 scheme, though scheme isn’t at the top of Mitchell’s list of priorities in looking for a college home.

“Education is at the top, I want to get a degree that’s going to help me down the road,” Mitchell said. “After that I would say my relationship with the coaching staff, that has to be there. “As far as early playing time I’m not looking for anyone to promise me anything, but I do want to go somewhere that I at least have a chance to get on the field early.”

In addition to Tennessee, Mitchell is being hotly pursued by many of the usual SEC suspects. Georgia is in frequent contact, as are both Mississippi and Mississippi State in addition to hometown Vanderbilt. Stanford has also inserted themselves into the race as a real player as well, with Mitchell having made the effort to get to Palo Alto for an unofficial visit this spring. He doesn’t seem to be in a rush to make a decision at this point and indicated he plans to get back to Knoxville in June for another official visit.

DT Tymon Mitchell, Nashville, Tenn.

Stanford, Vanderbilt and Tennessee recently have been viewed as the main contenders for the four-star defensive tackle, and they all remain high on his list. After attending Tennessee’s spring game, though, the Vols appear to be in even better shape with Mitchell, whose great uncle is UT legend Lester McClain. Mitchell visited Stanford earlier this month, and after making the trip to the West Coast he expressed concerns Sunday about the Cardinal’s distance from home. Stanford, Tennessee, Georgia and Vanderbilt are at the top of his list, and the Vols have continued to impress him.

I think Tennessee likes Mitchell and I think he could be a pretty good player if he continues to stay disciplined. He's just a tad undersized so obviously he has to make up for it with strength/quickness.

If Lawless doesn’t make it in then I could see us taking Mitchell as an extra DT.

Dartmouth offer.

I’d say he’s more of an edge rusher at this level. Looked kinda svelte in that Jr. tape. And 285 seems a lot more realistic than 309. Unless he’s hit the chow line this Spring.
