What do think will "change"?

I would no go to much by what Western Ky did that year as they were probably behind in most games and needing to score a lot, therefore they would have thrown a lot more passes. Without knowing where their D stood and what the scores of each game was, the number of passes and runs is just a number and has no real meaning.

I think this team could mirror the Kiffin team. Not enough SEC caliber players as the season goes and injuries start to occur. I see a 6-7 win window, but just like that team I see a team that will overachieve their talent level due to the new staff. Win or lose, I think they will be playing hard til the end which will be a refreshing change.

Somebody warn the Pilot.

I think something we see this season that is often overlooked and underemphasized is on the field leadership. We have been devoid of leaders since Dobbs and Barnett left and even then it was lacking. I think butuli and warrior have shown some potential on defense and hopefully we have a d lineman step up as well. On offense, like him or not, Jennings is a Big Orange Bleeding playmaker and leader and even as a freshman, Tre Smith displayed tremendous leadership potential. JG also looked to be embracing a bigger leadership role in the spring. Hopefully he can improve on getting rid of the ball earlier and secure the starters role. He clearly has the highest ceiling of all the qbs imo. Leadership can contribute to an extra win or two along the many times. Just look at the few game changing plays JJ showed the ability to make during his sophomore campaign

The defensive side is going to be interesting this season. I think we have a good idea based on prior experience what type of offense Helton will run. We don't really know what type of defense Pruitt is going to run in Year 1.

We expect a 3-4 type scheme in the future, but Pruitt has said he'll adapt to personnel and losing DK Jr makes it all the more difficult to do a true 3-4 in 2018. So we may see something like Pruitt ran at Florida State; a modified 4-3; or maybe a few different looks, with some 3-4 and some 4-3. Regardless, I expect some growing pains.

I think JJ Peterson, Bituli and Sapp will make a good LB group. Who knows if Kirkland will ever be the player he was his Fr year. Wouldn't surprise me to see Peterson have a similar type freshman year. I do wonder what made Kirkland wanna leave? He would have had a defensive minded coach and definitely would have gotten his best coaching since become a college football player. Was he encouraged to look around because they felt like he wouldn't stay healthy enough to contribute or did Kirkland not wanna buy into what Pruitt expects?

I'm only basing this off the past history of our coaches.

On the offensive side, I think it's going to look more like WKU (2014-2015). This will be Helton's FIRST time in total control and it's the only thing I'm really nervous about.

During that time they called an average of 555 passing and 450 running plays. (based on attempts and carries), Do you think Helton will call more running plays?

For our Defensive side, I think it's going to look similar to Georgia (2014-2015). I think Pruitt will still be the main play caller for defense.

Or do you think our defense will be something different? Thoughts?
If we stay healthy we won't cave on D the last 4-5 games as our guys learn the system and expectations

The last 4-5 games? We gave up 655 yards of offense to GaTech in game 1 last year. We caved all year long in 2017.

Some aren't liking the black cleats, they're not stylish, they're not a fashion statement. They're symbolic of the era of tough hard-nosed football played before the gimmick and finesse offense. Now the leather helmets are another thing! :)

If they went back to the leather helmets and eliminated the face mask, that would take care of the targeting penalties and concussion issues.

What won't change? That's the question.

When will we get the results from the change? No crystal ball here, but the way it looks it will be sooner than later.

It appears we have replaced a HC that was good at a Checker style of play with a DC that was a Grand Master of a Chess style of play. I feel good about CJP growing into the position of HC.

Due to our OL, I'd just like to see our QB (whoever that might be) get rid of the ball QUICKLY and on target ala Brady & the Patriots against Seattle (2015 SuperBowl). He didn't even have time to find the strings on the ball - he just got rid of it pronto in order to minimalize that lights-out Seahawk DL rush. Some passes across the middle would be welcome as well.

Pretty sure every team wants their QB to look like Brady lol

I still think there are so many variables it’s hard to say. Who will be healthy enough to play? Will we be strong enough up front to run an effective 3-4 defense? Will our OL develop and stay healthy? Will Smith be back and in shape enough to run block like he did last year? Will our run game develop to control the ball and let the defense learn and rest? I don’t however think we will look the same at game 1 versus game 12. Again staying healthy is the number one top priority followed closely by getting stronger. Those two things IMO will dictate exclusively “what we’ll look like.”

Uh, no.
Look at Jim Chaney at UT and Pitt and look at him. At Arky and UGA.
Pruitt will want a run control offense that can threaten deep.

Based on orange and white game, it looks like we will throw it a lot. Pruitt has already told us what to expect on defense

Offensive scheme: huge change from spread to pro-style.

Defensive scheme: huge change from 4-3 to 3-4 (a bigger deal than it sounds).

Special teams scheme: ??? don't know yet.

Coaching mindset: big change from "don't lose" to "win".

Players mindset: ?? don't know yet.

I'm really nervous about the new design on defense. Last time we tried a 3-4 didn't work out so well. But will see. Go Vols

Last time we tried we didn’t have a DC. Sunseri was a good position coach. You have to see the difference.

Understandable, Bill.

But I think we have a couple of things working in our favor now that were missing when Sunseri came along.

First, I think Sunseri was limited to one major theme. He could do 3-4, his way. And that was it. So the transition had to be 100% before we would be effective.

From the way Pruitt & Co. have been talking, I think they are much more comfortable with complexity and "multiples". Pruitt mentioned being willing to go with a 4-3 or hybrid in year 1 if needed because of personnel fit. That implies a much broader skill set, the ability to mix multiple themes.

Second, the Sunseri transition felt almost like we were *****-footing into it. A "well, okay, if that's what he thinks will work" kind of thing from the head coach and others on staff.

This go-round, it's the boss who is calling the tune. And you know he has the full backing of his whole crew; he chose them with his concepts in mind.

So I'm not worrying too much about that abortive attempt we had several years ago. Think this is gonna be a completely different kind of transition. :good!:

EDIT: heh, language blocker got me. The ***** word is kitty-footing. So to speak. Didn't want anyone thinking it was the f-bomb or anything. :)

I think we will look more like what Helton did at USC than at W.Ky. Like Helton said he wants a physical run game and to hit explosive passing plays too. We don't have a Sam Darnold at QB, so I doubt we pass as much as USC did.But they still liked to be physical in the run game. But when you have a Heisman candidate at QB and high NFL draft pick, then you throw it around a little more. We will probably see lots of 2 TE sets and a lot more TE involvement than we've seen in a while. That also helps out the OLine too. I'm not worried about Helton's playcalling, especially like I would be for a guy who has never been involved with calling plays.

Defensively I don't believe Pruitt will be making many playcall's. It may have to be run through him first, but he brought in a guy he trusts and knows what Pruitt wants done during games. He understands the value of trusting and being on the same page with his Coach's. A concept that Butch never learned. I'm sure JP will be heavily involved with what gets ran defensively but doubt he will be the main playcaller. Just a guess though. Think we will eventually look like what he ran at Ala on D but obviously we can't mirror that right now. His defensive philosophy hasn't really changed at any of his DC jobs. He wants his defense to make sure opponents know they are there, to play very physical, be prideful in their tackling, not give up huge plays and force turnovers. Also to be in the right position and not look lost like we have seen lately from our defense.

I'm only suggesting our offense will be more like WKU because that was the only time Tyson was more involved in the offensive plays. At USC, the older Helton had some sort of Kiffin/Tee Martin scheme, etc.. It's possible that Tyson had some ideas, but the older Helton was still boss.

What's interesting is that Neil Calloway and Bryan Ellis came to USC with Tyson during WKY days, but instead Ellis got promoted and Calloway stayed.

I'm wondering how much control Tyson might have though. These are people he's never worked with. So it's quite possible that our new offensive scheme is something brand new, but I think it's going back to early days of WKY.

They'll PASS first to set up the RUN. 1st reads and deep balls.

Actually... I think it's going to be a MOLD of Colorado State and WKU... How did we all forget that Will Friend was actually the OC/offensive line there?

Then you can dig deeper and realize that Mike Bobo was the OC at Georgia all those years

Are we going to be the 2014 Georgia Bulldogs? haha!

I formation

Quick hits in the passing game to make up for the OL

The TE will be the safety net in most cases

Also will make a run at leading the team in catches

Defense will be so much better as a unit

Instead of laughing the hosts will be giddy for UT
