And here’s the other part to this statement from Lanier...if Tennessee didn’t land Burns, do we think the staff would close the door on 1. Graduate transfers 2. Traditional transfers 3. Any recruits who may still come available?

For Lanier’s statement to be true and for Burns to not be a Vol it would mean that Lanier essentially was saying we are going to go with 11 (no Fore) or 12 (with Fore) and won’t consider adding anyone else. That if Jalen Lecque relclasses we won’t pursue him, or if a graduate transfer big man comes open we also won’t consider him...that line of thinking doesn’t make much sense at all.

Yes it does. They may have decided Burns or bust at this point.

Not like there’s a ton of options out there. And if something changed then obviously we could change our minds and target someone.

They decided Burns or bust because they believe Burns is coming...if they didn’t believe that then they would be looking to fill that spot.

Let me ask you this...what will your stance be at the next BOC when whichever member of the staff says they are still expecting to add someone?

Idk. When it happens I’ll let you know.

Your reasoning makes no sense.

I see 2 possibilities...

1. For whatever reason the question caughgt him off guard and that was his response.

2. He is already counting Burns as part of the roster just like the staff is Fore.

To me, IN MY OPINION, both of those are more likely than “we aren’t adding any more to this roster because we have whiffed on DJ Burns and won’t consider anyone else that is/might come available.”

Well 2 is a stretch.

A 3rd would be he’s letting the kid have his moment and isn’t tipping his hand to ruin the surprise.

And your last paragraph is your own Bruin style twist.

So a 4th possibility would be....we whiffed on Burns and don’t have anyone we are targeting now so we just say we are focusing on 2019. If someone becomes available in 2018 that we like then we can change course.

Likely answer is: when asked the question he gave the safest answer possible. In this case, if we land Burns, it’s an exciting surprise (no one will complain that we landed a recruit when a coach said we wouldn’t). And if we don’t, he covered his bases.

Seems like the logical reasoning here.

We don’t take kindly to logic around these parts lol

Not against the backdrop of Burns supposedly being a silent commit per BTO.

3 would essentially be what I said was 2

He could’ve said we don’t plan to add anyone at this time but that could change, he didn’t, so if you are taking his word as 100% gospel not sure why you would dismiss that part of it.

He doesn’t need to say that. He can just say what he said and if it changes so be it.

Interesting.

"Swerve. UT hoops associate HC Rob Lanier says in Memphis that the Vols do not anticipate adding to their roster this offseason. Says focus is on 2019 class. Barnes said last week that Vols planned to fill both open slots."
-- David Cobb

Could be Lanier meant that they're done with 2018s OVs and in home visits and simply misspoke.

What was the exact quote by rob?

“I place zero value on that comment at all.

Pruitt said last week the Vols aren't interested in any graduate OL yet are obviously in heavy pursuit of Kennedy.

Barnes said last week he expected to fill the spot. Lanier said tonight he didn't think so. I don't think a lot has changed in four days there.

If I were you going forward I wouldn't expect public comments from coaches to shed a great deal of light on what's happening in recruiting”
