Why is it so gloom and doom around here lately?

Feel like a broken record saying this, but look at the schedule. College football prognosticating is all about the schedule.

IMO, there are 3 gimmies:

ETSU
UTEP
Charlotte

There are 3 games we should probably win:

Kentucky
Missouri
at Vandy

That's 6 wins and a bowl right there. Anything beyond that is gravy. A win at home against Florida or a win on the road against South Carolina would be huge; I think those are more likely than beating West Virginia.

I completely agree with this. I think uf and SC jr are both winnable, but they're also both losable.

Butch Jones is gone, D4H isn't posting much, New coaching staff that has the resume to make Tennessee elite, players getting drafted/making deals, the football field is look'n good, someone is bound to make a hype video with copper head road in the background ( if they haven't all ready ) and I could go on.

Sure next year is what it is, but it should be an improvement either way, some of you are so snarky and negative lately about anything or view...

Where is D4H??? I wanted to see his thoughts on the Steelers drafting a QB in the 3rd round.

thanks. to me, it feels like we're on a really long road trip, and the kids just keep asking "are we there yet?"

and you have to keep giving them same answer...."no".

they then ask "when?"

you say "dunno, i see a couple storms ahead, maybe a wreck or two...don't worry, you'll know it when we do, try to enjoy the ride, k?"

then the requisite "well i'm bored, can we stop?, there's nothing to do, my butt hurts from sitting so long, i'm hungry, i gotta go to the bathroom.........."

that's where we are.....

:p

edit: that doesn't mean the guy driving the car doesn't want to get to the intended destination as quickly as possible either....believe me, he'd like to have just chartered a jet and skipped all the in between.

There are storms and wrecks ahead but enjoy the ride, dammit! Don't make me pull over! :)

The last decade brings us down quite a bit. Unfortunately, most TN fans live in a bubble. They only watch the Vols and whoever the Vols are playing that day. They don’t see the level that other SEC powerhouses are operating at in this era. They think “coaching them up” eliminates talent gaps. You saw it with Butch when we went to Oregon. Many here thought we’d “go up air an punch em in the mouff” and get a win not understanding our position vs Oregon at the time.

Hopes and cliches are fun but they don’t win games in this era.

You overrate your sense of reality and underrate ours.

It’s certainly possible. I live outside the state though (maybe you too too I don’t know) and see what we’re doing through the lens of our competition. Most of our fans still live in the 90s.

I see from my lofty point in Texas that you apply “most” to what you’ve read from a FEW on a message board. Hard to argue with that science. I’m going to use your technique. The VAST MAJORITY of this board is aware of the talent situation of UGA, Bama et al. :hi:

Just not sold on Pruitt, has no HC experience, his recruiting has been sub par and he does not engage fans. I think fans are tired of terrible Tennessee football with all the drama, HC changes, AD changes and being dominated by all our rivals including Vanderbilt. Most pundits think it could be a 3-5 year rebuild before UT competes in the East, do fans have that much patience after living through the past 10+ years of mediocrity?

The real ones are still here for way longer than that. :wavey:

That’s why I stated it was still early. More concern is how we closed the last class whiffing on the big targets. I suppose I expected more from a top recruiter, but I think that it was premature. We just need a big recruiting win for some momentum.

Pruitt was recruiting most of the players he whiffed on before he took the reigns of TN, he could not convince any of them to take a chance on him and his new program. Early signing period changes the recruiting game and it is very important to get recruits locked down early and hold on to them before December. Doesnt seem to be happening yet for Pruitt and staff, hope he can turn it around.

I hope so, but Tennessee football now has a generation of fans who have become accustomed to mediocrity and losing. The recruits are part of that generation as well, makes the process even more difficult. Besides, a real fan should be a realist with all aspects of their favorite football team. I hope Pruitt is successful, but like I said he is unproven and his recruiting is sub par.

I'll tell you this I am not negative at all. Pruitt has more then 14 fresh bodies coming in to include a few JUCO transfers and Grad transfers that will add depth immediately, plus he specifically recruited almost all the guys coming in the summer. Which means he doesn't need a trial period to see where they will best fit in he already knows where he wants to put them.

I am excited to see what product we come up with by fall especially after our injured players are healthy and back practicing.

I honestly think this team is being under estimated and I think Pruitt and his staff are being underestimated.

I will say this if there is one thing Pruitt will do it is start those players that he knows will get the job done. No matter who they are or what their college status is (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior). Pruitt just wants to win and I think with all the incoming personnel he has a chance to put together a really good team who will compete in the SEC.

You can only hope as a fan this is what Pruitt offers so I will wait back and hopefully watch it unfold.

Dividing the team for spring games doesn't give a very good view of what's there. It's something like dividing an army or being short of critical mass - not putting together enough fissile material to support a chain reaction. It's even harder to judge when you are missing some key ingredients to begin with. We'll have to wait for football time in Tennessee to see what we've got, and I expect it will be significantly better than what we saw this spring - but likely short on depth as you would guess from the O&W game.

It’s not just here, though VolNation is often blindly optimistic. Rivals, 247, TN sports talk radio are bad too.

I’m surrounded by Bammers, Dawgs, Tigers, etc and they don’t even laugh at the Vols anymore. We receive their pity now which is the worst.

I truly hope that Bama puts somewhere around 60 points on Tennessee in Knoxville. I hope the Tide fans in Atlanta can somehow get their act together. They are embarrassing the rest of us.

Grew up during the Battle era. Majors arrived and we thought instant winning...took awhile. The malaise then makes this stretch pale in comparison. We’re always there when the winning starts.

You’re aware of your own experience. Mine varies. Most Bama or UGA fans I encounter love the exchange. Both of those fanbases experienced a long stretch of like mediocrity. I’m not sure if you need Vol fans to shut down and curl into the fetal position in order to not come off as “blindly optimistic”. If so, you’re never going to be happy.

Logically speaking, we have at least 6-6 talent but if these coaches get the most out of their players then we should win a couple that we aren’t suppose to based on pure effort. If the past 10 years weren’t so bad I would probably be predicting 8 or 9 wins but I’m not expecting anything more than 6-6 because that’s been about what our program is for the past 10 years and until that changes that will be what I expect.
