Amazing exchange between Bruin and myself. A disagreement that lasted like 4 posts.

And they said it couldn't be done.

Chris had a good post on the subject. I am
Not sure how many recruits actually pull the trigger on or right after visits in hoops. I am not recalling very many that happen like that but maybe I am wrong

I’d still like to know if it’s the norm, or not? I mean obviously for us it hasn’t been, but are other schools nailing down commits like that, especially after a kid’s first OV?

I believe Memphis got immediate commitments with their last two recruits- Isaiah Maurice and Antwann Jones.

I would put new coaching hires into a different category than we are talking about. Now if Penny is doing that well guys a year from now that will be impressive

Basketball recruiting is more like QB recruiting in football.

Guys are looking to find a fit and lock down their spot. Offers don't go out to everyone under the sun like in football. And schools don't pull offers after you've committed. (Unless you're Travon Landry and you're signed to play for nice guy Cuonzo Martin)

Not sure how that plays into the discussion. I don't really care what other schools are doing. I know we are bringing guys in hoping to get a commit and they leave here and continue on with their visits. We have finished second for a ton of guys that we really wanted. Similar to Cuonzo Martin.

That doesn't really surprise me as much as both guys are late, last minute signees for 2018. And Jones is committed to his 3rd school now.

I'm talking more about guys who have more time, options, and available visits to take.

If Barnes wants to make sure these kids are a good fit for Tennessee, would you rather them take more visits then decide or commit now then end up changing their mind at the last minute?

Please list some examples. I'm all ears.

Keeping in mind how many D1 scholarships are given each year.

Yeah I agree with Ziti. Basketball recruits stick once they commit barring any coach firings, taking other jobs or investigations. They dont change because of bad seasons or other coaches continuing to recruit after they commit.

It definitely isn't as common as in football, but it does happen. Josh Selby and Aaron Craft, just for a Tennessee flavored example.

The two sports are very much apples and oranges, so a one for one comparison is just really tough to make. Whoever used the QB recruiting analogy earlier probably came closest to a solid comparison.

Right on.

The only guy I can remember who backed off their commit to us was Aaron Craft. That's cause the home school finally came through with the offer/opening.

The bigger point is you can't pressure guys that are 2019 recruits to commit now. That's too far out imo.

2018 guys are a different story though

You can pressure guys who take OV's.

Now Ziti you know this is a new thing. We have no idea how this OV thing is going to workout

How many top 100 2019 players right now are committed?

If it's a large majority I can buy putting the heat on is ok but my guess is most are uncommitted

Plus the bulk of the top 150 will be committing between now and the fall signing period. Many of them will commit before summer’s end.

You absolutely can pressure for a commit. We have 3 spots not 30.

Mann saying he is making a decision in a few weeks is dang plenty fair imo. That's making a quick decision as far as I am concerned

I offer this question to you guys.

If Mann says to you and you are Barnes,

"Coach I loved my visit, I love Tenn, I can certainly see myself playing for you. This was my first OV and I really feel like I need one more to just make sure this is what I want to do. This is a lifetime decision and I want it to me the right one. I will make a decision and I won't look back after I visit Florida"

What's your response if you are Rick Barnes?

Guys you can dream up whatever scenario you want. It’s just frustrating that we seemingly lead for a kid and we get the OV and he doesn’t shut it down.

We’ve had trouble closing the deal. Even BTO agrees.

That’s possible, but when it’s hapoened so many times it’s worth asking imo, this isn’t the first instance.
