Clay said Missouri tried as well and were told no too.

Alabama
Tennessee
Missouri

At least 3 we know of.

How would we have felt about Hugh Freeze as OC at Tennessee? I think I would have been fine with it.

LSU tried too.

I think overall hard to not be excited if you had gotten him because you would then know no matter what that your going to have a special product on field.

Currently prospects are in wait and see mode for offense. It takes getting them on campus to watch practice, scrimmage and spring game. I think spring game having film of offense will help a lot to pick that side of ball up.

Tennessee Vols football: Adjusting to new OL coach Will Friend 'not a challenge' for Vols

After working under former offensive line coaches Don Mahoney in 2016 and Walt Wells last year, some of Tennessee’s veteran linemen might view their transition to new offensive line coach Will Friend and another new way of doing things as a challenge going into the 2018 season.

But Drew Richmond doesn’t see it that way.

With the Vols looking to bounce back from a 4-8 season last year that featured plenty of struggles on the offensive line, in part because of injuries, Richmond said Tuesday that he doesn’t mind dealing with a new position coach again this year.

“It’s not a challenge when you want different results,” the redshirt junior offensive tackle said before Tennessee’s practice Tuesday afternoon. “You’ve just got to buy in and that’s all.

“It’s like you getting a new job. You’ve got to buy in. I can’t go nowhere. I’m not going nowhere. We’re not going anywhere, so we’re buying in and we’re listening and we’re being coachable. Coach Pruitt talks a lot about being coachable, and that’s all we’re doing.”

Going into Tennessee’s final week of spring practice, Richmond said he has enjoyed learning from Friend both in film sessions and meeting rooms and on the field.

“I think he’s a good teacher,” said Richmond, a former top-100 prospect from Memphis (Tenn.) University School who was one of the stars of the Vols’ 2015 recruiting class. “I mean, he knows what he’s doing, along with everybody else.

“Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt, he’s been around, so you just have to trust everyone that’s around. You’ve got to trust, and that’s what this is, about trusting and bonding. I appreciate Coach Friend and the whole staff.”

They asked about not having the autograph session. He said he didn't know it was gone. But sounded like he wished it was still there cause they need the fans and he likes to do it for the fans.

Clay Travis just said on local Memphis radio that he knows for a fact Tennessee tried to hire Hugh Freeze as OC and was told no by the SEC.

Did I miss that? Was that known / rumored?

It was known that Pruitt was considering Freeze. Hubbs mentioned it. I don't think it was known that the SEC office didn't want anyone to hire him.

Later, I was told by a Bama fan that they were told no by the SEC office, and it made sense.

Pretty sure that's what the VN brainstorm said was the possibility. That or LeBron < MJ. I don't remember

* Your daily position change update: Alontae Taylor, who got a lot of run at corner in the scrimmage, was still at defensive back, while Greg Emerson and Eric Crosby remained at OG. However, Matthew Butler was back at DL and LaTrell Bumphus returned to TE.

* The OL was still a bit shorthanded, but Riley Locklear was back in action Tuesday. Notably, Trey Smith and DeVante Brooks were doing running on the side with the S&C staff. It’s the first time we’ve seen Smith do any running at practice.

* Just caught a few minutes of the routes on air period, and Jarrett Guarantano had one of the best throws I’ve seen him make this spring. Tennessee did a few different route combos, with double-moves, deep posts and some arrow patterns. Guarantano uncorked a perfect 45-yard bomb to Marquez Callaway on a double-move, hitting him in-stride, on the outside shoulder where the junior wideout could stay in bounds. On the flip side, Guarantano tossed what would’ve been a pick-6 on the very next throw, going high and wide to Brandon Johnson.

* Kevin Sherrer was displeased with his MLB unit on Tuesday, making Will Ignont, Shanon Reid and Solon Page III go back in line several times during a drill a shoot drill. Darrin Kirkland Jr. drew Sherrer’s ire, too, with really only Quart’e Sapp and Daniel Bituli drawing any praise.

* Chris Rumph was HOT today, especially toward Jordan Allen. The junior college outside linebacker had to redo at least 3-4 reps and then was still forced to do up-downs when he couldn’t get it right. Darrell Taylor continues to lead that unit — both with effort and fundamentals.

* As reported earlier today, 4-star DT Jaelin Humphries is in town for a visit and was closely watching the DL during practice. Fulton (Tenn.) also had a number of coaches and prospects on campus, including 3-star LB DeShawn Page.

Really surprised that Emerson is still at OG

They need more OGs unless they want the O&W game to be such a mismatch that nothing can be gleaned from it, IMO.

And also Emerson is one of our most physically impressive linemen (on either side of the ball). I’ll be surprised if he’s still there in fall though.

Agreed

Pruitt Presser cliffs from Hubbs

I think we went 142 plays with the 1, 2, 3's. I felt offensively we created some more explosive plays. Running backs ran well and blocked well. Protected pretty well up front.

Didn't create enough turnovers defensively.

Coming back today we had some guys who looked like they were in practice 13 and were just trying to get through the day. We had to jump start some guys. We will one day have a football team around where I don't have to police them.

Pruitt says team needs the passion of the fans to show up on Saturday for this team so they can compete in that environment and evaluate them in that environment and it's big for recruiting.

On Emerson, he didn't play his senior year. He's done a good job getting his body healthy and to get kind of in football shape. It's good for him to work on both sides of the ball.

Pruitt said he's excited about meeting players parents this weekend, getting his team ready to play and recruiting.

As a whole, the group of running backs have improved this spring. We have little depth at that position. That's why Fant is there. We are looking for able bodies to play there. Guys who have been back there have competed.

Pruitt: We have improved on both sides of the ball in the line of scrimmage as spring has progressed.

On Fair, he probably has the worst position to coach because I'm in there all the time. He's smart, picks things up fast, he's demanding of kids. He played it at the highest level for 8 years. He has his degree, all-american, first round pick. Most guys you recruit and have on your team want that.
