Recruiting Discussion

Guard is the glaring hole to me right now, that’s my sole concern...but we have Bone and Turner 2 more years, so worst case you sign a couple guards in 2019 to learn behind Bone/Turner/Bowden, then they take over. We quickly forget Bone/Turner/Bowden were all in their 2nd year this season and were good enough at guard to lead us to a Top 5 all time regular season.

Tried to respond to this last night but the browser kept crashing on mobile.

Guard is a big concern and we aren't gonna add anyone in 2018 to fill that need down the road IMO. 2019 we MUST hit on at least 1 guard but probably 2. They need to be good and we can't wait 2 or 3 years for them to be good. And they aren't gonna get to cut their teeth getting 30 minutes a game in 2019-20 most likely because Bone, Bowden and Turner will still be here.

It's simple on the guards. Recruit 1-2 guys in the 2019 class that can develop into winning players that start as sophomores OR recruit winning 1-2 players they can start immediately in 2020.

My guess it ends up being 1 in each class that fits that

Sidenote to the guards discussion...

Jordan Bone and Lamonte Turner were top 150 players.

Lamonte didn't keep his rivals ranking when he reclassified but 247 has him top 150 on their rankings and composite.

In the Rick Barnes era our highest rated recruits are Pons, Bone, Lamonte and Jalen Johnson.

No they won’t, but they will get to practice every days against 3 of the most experienced SEC guards in the league...so they’ll definitely gain some valuable experience. I’m sure Barnes will try and find minutes for those guys in games against lesser competition as much as possible to get them as much game experience as possible. Alexander and Schofield didn’t play huge minutes as freshman, they were like 8&9 type rotational players.

On that note we are involved early with 2020 Jaden Springer and Keon Johnson...Springer is already a 5 star and Johnson is about to be, those are 2 guards that come if you land either or both come in Day 1 and warrant big minutes.

I tend to agree, not every Top 150 guard in the country is only going to consider a school with senior guards where they can start Day 1.

Yep. Unless you are recruiting top 30 players there should be no problem adding guys to come in and play significant minutes year 1 and then step into the starting job for 3 years.

Right...a guy like Jalen Lecque is probably looking at places he is gonna start Day 1, but after that on our board I think most of those guys are good with playing behind Bone/Turner/Bowden for a season.

Jalen Lecque starts for us imo . Dude is probably the best guard in the nation .

Disagree by a lot

Just look at Harris this year

That's one kid with a dad looking for a promise and an over inflated opinion of his kid.

He's 5'9" and the 17th best point guard in the country.

The 16 guys in front of him didn't go to rebuilds under a first year head coach so they could get on the court immediately.

Rebuilds???

I would bet my ass a number of those 16 players looked long and hard at the rosters the schools they are going to and the possibility of winning a starting job was important.

Plenty of rosters aren't rebuilds but appear to offer kids a chance to start.

We should have zero trouble landing guards in the 2019 class.

Zero.

Agreed. We shouldn't have any trouble getting a good one. However it gets more difficult to get one you will approve of because of their paper ranking. The higher the ranking the more they expect to see a roster with starting probabilities immediately.

If you pull the PG’s ranked 75-150 nationally from the 2018 class not many are likely starting this year.

Doesn’t make it true...you’ve got Jeremiah Martin returning and first thing Penny did was add his HS PG...Stevie Wonder could see there’s not a big need at PG for Memphis.

Of course it doesn't make it true. Much of recruiting is a game of untruths. From what I know of Barnes he doesn't play those games and that hurts some I am sure
