Mullen has the highest floor of all the legit candidates we had a shot at.

He's not a sure thing at Florida though. Some guys just can't make the adjustment to the big time and results don't always translate like fans project. Florida won't settle for what he did at MSU. He very well could go 8-4 or worse for 3 years and get fired. Just never know. Not many sure things in college football coaching.

agreed.

He may do fine but he doesn't scare me like a Chip Kelly hire would have.

Agree on the surface level that this is true

Think fit matters at most jobs though too, and Mullen is a better fit in Gainesville than Chip would have been. Jmo

Mullen will do good, but not a championship caliber coach, IMO

I maintain Pruitt has the lower floor, but higher ceiling, and we’ll see how the chips fall

i agree with that. and the low floor for Pruitt vs. the high floor for Mullen i think has more to do with the situation than anything else. if nothing else, Mullen has run a program and has coached with a lot of his staff before.

inherently, there's just some time advantages to that, from a communication/organizational standpoint, that pruitt will have to figure out.

you can debate who's roster is in worse shape. i think we are probably if you really dug in to it. but i don't think UF's is 'good' by any stretch.

both guys have some work cut out in that arena.

you're right, but only because Chip knows himself really well. he wanted no part of the pressure cooker.

stylistically, philosophically....kelly would have been a great fit there.

Stylistically and philosophically I agree.

Just don’t think everything else quite fit together. Now, whether that was enough to get in the way of his success there or not, guess we’ll never know.

it's still relative. he's been a head coach at MSU, and didn't win anything.

butch jones was a coach at CMU and CIN and won conf titles.

everything's relative, not transitive.

Surely you aren't comparing Getting MSU to #1 to butch coaching at CMU and Cin. Not even close

Two different things. One really good season where he put together three wins over 8-5 Auburn, LSU and Texas AM teams that were overrated top 8 teams to get to #1 ranking before losing 2 of his last 3.

Butch Jones resume was fine. Just couldn't hold it together in this league.

Dan Mullen had the #1 ranking for a couple of weeks. He also has been in the league since 2009 and has had a conference record above .500 exactly 1 time.

I agree butches resume was fine but it didn't include big boy football. Mullens does

Really, nobody knows anything at this point. As Tennessee fans, we're giving PruittCo the benefit of the doubt and downplaying Mullen. I think both can do well and make UT-UF a marquee matchup again. As far as returning a tarnished program to a national championship contender, the jury's out on both.

The reality is, the conference is better when both UT and UF are powerhouse programs. I'd like UT to power up faster so we can release a decade of frustration on the Gators, but it was fun when UT-UF meant something.

transitive vs. relative.

my only point has been, and will continue to be, no one knows how good or bad he'll be at UF. now, i'd lean towards better than you think. but as stated, that may just be because he's at UF and not MSU (they're different). not necessarily because he's elevating UF to a championship caliber program again....not convinced he'll be THAT good.

IDT Kelly would have liked the SEC. He hates fundraising, schmoozing and gladhanding. Fan expectations and community obligations at UF or UT would have driven him wild. UCLA and the Pac-12 are a much better fit with his personality.

You left out SEC level recruiting. He REALLY loves that. :)

I'm treating the Pruitt evaluation as a blank slate until the season starts, and we can see the team. I don't want to get caught up in high expectations from spring and early recruiting wins just to have that shot to ****e once we see that on-the-field play isnt improving. Overall, VN is already pulling the rollercoaster car up the first rise. I don't want to be one of those guys with a coach's name as a reference in a username that ends up cursing the guy 6 months later because he's floundering. I agree that Pruitt's SEC/ACC pedigree bolsters some of my early confidence in him, but he's never run the entire show. That has to be intimidating, and he's going to make some mistakes on his path to being a good head coach.

Honestly, I appreciate his refreshing lack of public-relations manufactured coachspeak more than anything else at the moment. If he can push this team to an above .500 record next season, then we'll have reason to celebrate.

Correct but without the head coaching experience.

i mean, that's not new or anything? and we made our pitch to Mullen. didn't pan out.

i think situationally, mullen is in a better position than Pruitt. but long term, i think you get a coach in Pruitt that has his best years well in front of him.

it's certainly possible Mullen peaked a few years ago at MSU with that magical season, and has parlayed it in to a job at UF with built ins that can help a guy like him sustain a level of success that consistently keeps him off the chopping block, but his own shortcomings keep them from the promised land.

maybe he's Mark Richt?

maybe Pruitt is Bob Stoops?

point is, we just won't know for a bit....

Ok I don't plan to get into a discussion about this and know this won't go over well but felt it's worth sharing

I have been told by someone involved with the everyday activities within the walls of the program that Pruitt is doing great in between the lines BUT he is really struggling with the other stuff. I was told he has missed meetings and has forgotten about a number of appointments. He's working his staff extremely hard and has left them hanging at times.

This doesn't bother me or surprise me but I do hope it doesn't result in his staff becoming frustrated.
