Early reports this spring are that's he's starting DE and doing well. Had 3 sacks in the scrimmage on Saturday. I think he'll shine in a 3-4 and it's now or never for him. Which I think will motivate him to play his best this fall. Plus if he gets invited to the combine he'll put up very good numbers there. JMO

No football talk in the "my generation's best basketball player is better than your generation's best basketball player" thread!!!!

so i've been thinking about how all the reviews from all the prospects that visit this campus, with these coaches, all come away with glowing remarks, and everyone is very confident in that this staff is 'gon turn it 'round real quick'.

and it's annoying because everyone says that, and then........they either go somewhere else, or we sweat it out.

anyone think that one of the reasons we're going to a more traditional scrimmage game format, is so this staff can put something, anything, out there that shows recruits what we want to be able to do, and how they might fit?

kinda hard to do with no game evidence or results to fall back on.

and not that the spring game would necessarily solve all those issues, but it at least puts something on tape to show a kid.....

and assume that's true (on any level), does it translate in to some commitments by month's end?

The core of our class commits when our team shows what the coaches have or have not taught ON THE FIELD. Especially when you’re talking trench guys. They need to see something that they want to be a part of.

agreed. think the spring game being done in the format it's going to be done in, is a step in trying to achieve that?

Maybe gets them to sit down and watch our games. We’re not even at full roster.

I don't think that's why they're doing the spring game that way, but I do think it can help in that regard. It seems to me like he is setting up the spring game that way because the current players will get the most benefit out of that format. If our current roster was deeper and more entrenched in his system they may would do some different things but I think it will always be a real game like scrimmage. He mentioned some teams having player drafts but he said that only worked in the previously stated optimal team circumstances. And yes, I realize that it's hard to imagine a team that is gonna go 15-0 this year doesn't meet those parameters, but it's true. :)

We still on this LeJames Bron stuff this morning?

i don't think it's THE reason they're doing it either....

just something that occurred to me, one of the things hurting us right now is it's difficult to 'show' a kid what it looks like....a spring game in this format, at least does that, even if it's just a little bit.

i agree with you on the overall, main purpose behind it....and that will have more benefit on this season than probably anything it does in recruiting.

that said, i am hoping for a good crowd. iirc, we should have a fair amount of visitors in town for that weekend.

as for the 15-0...let's just say i'm not against it.

I agree with that. I just don't see him reformatting the actual game very much ever. I think it will always be a game. The most gimmicky thing I could picture him doing is a player draft but that wouldn't happen any time soon.

me neither. i think competition is the main goal here, and going out in a glorified skills challenge, doesn't do that.

you don't split out equal reps for everyone to not find out what they do when the lights come on....even if it's a scrimmage.

now, as he gets more veteran teams, i could see him maybe divide up reps in a scrimmage, to maybe help develop younger guys (kinda like a game 1 or 2 NFL pre season game).

Agree. If you watched closely what and he did last season, he played like a DE in a 3-4 even though he was in a 4-3. There's not a big learning curve for him IMO. He just needs to strengthen and toughen up for the position.

I could see that. I know at first Lyle was setting attendance records at these spring games with the gimmicks and that's nice and all. Especially since we kinda needed something to get excited about after Dooley. But it got old after a while and didn't seem to benefit the players. Plus I kinda think he was using creative accounting to create those attendance estimates. It will be nice to just go back to football. If they wanna do a skills competition it should be like a pre-game activity in the parking lot with former players coming back and playing with the kids or something. That would be fun.
