I don't think anyone would even begin to argue the coaching was good or even acceptable last year. However, UT was only a few plays and breaks from being 7-5.

However, no matter how improved the coaching is, injuries can easily change the course of the season. Additionally, there are always a number of teams on one's schedule where the prognosticators miss or that fail to or exceed expectations. These are unknowns and for the most part, out of the Vols' control.

Assuming...or admittedly hoping...the injury bug isn't extreme, the season could easily hinge on momentum. With an early win against WVU and/or UF, the course of the season would dramatically change.

As a fan, this is why I will watch and do so optimistically. I'll hold off making predictions...it messes with my enjoyment of each week.

We were also a 4th down stop away from going 3-9 as well though. If the UMASS QB doesn't get hurt we could have been 2-10. That stuff works both ways.

Can someone tell me the appeal of South Carolina to recruits? I’m seeing them in so many 4 stars’ top 10’s, 5’s, getting CB’s for them, etc. A few of them are guys we want.

They must have a few ace recruiters. I mean what’s the pitch? Kentucky has better football history. They’ve had a couple decent seasons in a historically down East (which is now over), but they’ve never won the SEC and never will, not to mention their stadium is a dump. I’d hate to play there 7 times a year!

What am I missing?

Disagree big time. Not saying Byrd is definitely a top talent, but in general coaching can absolutely squander top talent.

That’s fine.

Funny how some dudes had no trouble getting drafted at all though 🤭

Fact is, a walk-in is getting burn, and Byrd is in a precarious position of being completely irrelevant

Not trying to attack Byrd, but it’s his move to make

Either Marcus saw something in his visit that made him believe we will overachieve or it's just the same ole same ole media hype so they can bash us when we don't reach these expectations

I would love to come out with 8 wins, but I think it's much more important for us to focus on playing entire football games at high intensity and actually finish the game at that same level. We got to get back to ground zero and build up from there.

CBJ was able to get us winning some games and even bowls but it was on the back of pure talent & a collection of individual efforts. For a healthy program, I have to see the coaching and development side, as well as the motivational aspect come out in the team before I am confident we have a good 2018, 2019, 2020, etc.

I'm at 6-7 wins but some real close, hard fought games against our rivals. Then the following year, the sky is the limit.

I get the appeal for guys who play defense. Muschamp has a great history of putting defenders into the NFL. Even when his teams at UF were garbage he was pumping out draft picks on defense year in and year out.

Football history is the most overrated thing in recruiting.

Location
Facilities
Coaches (with charisma and some clout)
Momentum

Don’t care what the win total is this year.

We are rebuilding. It sucks.

What I am looking for is a different mindset, approach, development, in game adjustments, strength and attitude.

That and recruiting will tell me where we are headed.

If we can get that and then start bringing in the top flight recruits then we will see a shift in the win column and our expectations can be back to where they should be - playing and competing for
Championships

I’m convinced recruiting and our win total this fall go hand in hand. I think negative recruiting is killing us and the big name guys are mostly taking a wait and see approach.

If we make a bowl, we will be on the right track recruiting wise. If we win 8 games (I think it’s possible), we will blow the lid off recruiting and be the toast of the SEC. if we miss a bowl game (also quite possible), I’m thinking it’s a top 20ish class and we rinse/repeat for next year, with a lot of negativity or apathy weighing on us from our local media and fanbase at large.

It’s kind of fascinating to watch. I somehow feel a lot less emotional about it now than I have in the past.

wasn't he also the one that said we were going to win the East in 2015 and 2016?

just sayin'. and he should have been right in 2016.
