Trump says US will institute tariffs on steel and aluminum imports next week

I say we give China Oklahoma and they write off our debt.

I cannot think of a soul in this country who believes that trade with China is "fair" --

-- if your definition of "fair" is "equal."

I actually think that Trump believes that, though. To him its just net dollars in and net out, and it those two numbers are not the same then the trade is "unfair." Someone really needs to explain to him some basics here. Or at least have the nerve to tell him that his current understanding is oversimplistic and wrong.

Won't do any good. Honestly, LG, at this point we don't know what is a negotiating tactic and what is a firmly held belief in which he will base policy.
I'm banking on the former.

Me too. While I think Trump is intelligent, I think he's largely incurious and has no core beliefs, much like his predecessor.

He's not even in the ballpark of being right.

I agree tariffs suck but sometimes they are necessary because there is a difference in free trade and fair trade.

How does it make trade more fair when the majority of Americans suffer? You're trusting the government to try to make things "fair" for specific groups in America, while America as a whole suffers. It makes no sense. If your business is international, relies on imports, and now you can't afford them, how are you going to compete?

I can't believe this has to be said to a "conservative", but don't look to central planners to ensure fairness. You trust the idiots in government way too much.

Right. Right. Right.
Free trade = trade free of coercion

Fair trade = b.s. spouted by special interest that profits from specific trade barrier.

The only true free trade is in Econ 101 textbooks.

Huff is still navigating 10th grade home economics. I never knew sewing and cooking were so intricately woven into the fabric of international trade.....?

It doesn't matter if your imports cost more if the customers you sell them to don't have jobs and an income to buy them.

I don't like tariffs anymore than you guys that's why I'd rather equal the playing field with reduced regulations and mandates within our own borders.

So, because corrupt politicians inevitably dole out favors to special interest groups, 100% free trade doesn't exist, and thus is discredited as a desirable policy.

You're a ****ing genius!

The point was that they have international customers. We're also creating unemployment.

Gimme a break. I obviously despise tariffs and you're pushing for them, and you're gonna tell me we feel the same way?

You see things for how you want them to be, not for how they are. That’s a major flaw of yours. You’re an idealist.

I made no comment on what is or isn't a desirable policy, did I? I made a comment on true free trade.

How am I pushing for them? I just live in the real world and understand sometimes you just have to take a bite out the old **** sandwich. When your partner slaps you in the nads, you got to hit them back even though it hurts.

That true free trade is a pipe dream when it comes to the real world.

There's a spectrum. Govt has it's grubby hands in every single aspect of life, so it's virtually impossible to engage in a transaction free of coercion. I would posit that buying a tv is more free market then buying healthcare. Buying a taco from a street vendor is freer than buying an automobile. Buying a computer is more free market then paying college tuition. Etc.
