Ok. But they are already recycling these guys. My prediction is he is average to below average and leaves in a couple years one way or another.

Manny Diaz has been recycled like a tire and had a great defense this year. Shoop never clicked with butch. If he flops at MSU I’ll eat my words but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t field solid units.

Not really recycled. His first stint at MSU was good, so Texas hired him. Then he got fired and had to start all over. Went back to MSU, where he was still good. Got hired by Richt.

I don't know if they will be able to recruit, but MSU has a couple of really smart coaches down there with Moorhead and Shoop.

#13 in total D in 2014 and #2 in 2015. Nobody dislikes the Big 10 as much as me, but one has to give the devil his due.

As I said before, he's a good coach but it didn't pan out at UT.

I just don't buy that Shoop is a bad coach. I'm sure that there is a story there.

Coached defense for teams that were offensively anemic and faced vanilla game plans from teams trying to win by scoring 20 and protecting the ball.

Had good assistants that have had even more success without him.

Wasn’t ready for the big time.

This is my opinion on Vandy and Penn State defensive ranking being fools gold.

If you look back the Butch Jones era headed downhill when Maggit and AJ were out of the program. Every video you saw or practice report you read they were pushing the team. They were alpha leaders that held the team accountable.

After they were gone it turned to Hurd and Barnett. Nothing at all against Barnett he was and awesome player just not a vocal leader.
Hurd was all about Hurd and we found out about that when he quit.

Butch didn’t hold his players or coaches accountable. Then when he lost the players who pushed the team to be better they all took a break. I don’t think Pruitt knows what taking a break is and I don’t think he hired a coach that does either.

Hell his x told me that when he went to take a dump he would have an iPad sitting on his lap studying offenses. She said they all hated Saban but knew his system worked and followed it. That’s exactly what they are doing here. Using what they know works. They all want to make this team winners.

Kind of silly to write Shoop off at this point. The UT stop is clearly the outlier on his resume, and I think his struggles here had more to do with Jones and his bonehead S&C decisions.

I never bought in on him. Was board enemy number one for suggesting he wouldn’t translate here.

I can buy that with vandy but not PSU. I think the more likely scenario is either his co/DC Brent Pry was more responsible for his success at vandy and PSU OR butch severely handicapped him here.

True genius is borrowing and then making it better here's hoping...

Tennessee was back on the practice field Tuesday for its seventh session of the spring. As has been the case for the last week or so, the media got about 10 minutes of action.

* As has been the case all spring, the defensive backs worked all the way across the field from the media viewing, but Jeremy Pruitt continues to essentially lead all the individual drills in the secondary. While the Vols did a few ball drills, it’s notable just how much the DBs work without the football. Today, Pruitt was coaching both the corners and safeties on hand-placement and making the correct first-step in press coverage.

I’ve noted this was a possibly on the GQ a few times in the last week or so, but Maleik Gray was working with the CBs and not the safeties today.

The weather conditions were pristine, but Tuesday's routes on air period wasn’t exactly perfect. Lots of ball hit the turf. Marquez Callaway slipped on a pair of routes, while Latrell Williams had a lackadaisical drop trying to make a one-handed catch, earning an earful from coach David Johnson. Jarrett Guarantano had his moments — nearly perfect on throws to his left but airmailing several throws to his right.

Also the QBs and RBs worked on passes out of the backfield today. Trey Coleman was repping behind Tim Jordan, Ty Chandler and Princeton Fant during other RB drills, but the Louisiana native might be the most comfortable and fluid route runner at tailback.

* The OL did some 5-man sled work at the start of drills, but later transitioned to combo-blocks in the run game. Notably, Ryan Johnson was back solely at center, but freshman Jerome Carvin did see work at RG today.

*Tennessee had a nice collection of recruits at practice today including…
4-star ATH Khafre Brown
4-star OT Anthony Bradford
3-star WR Jacob Pickney
Rashad Torrence (2020)
Michael Wyman (2020)
Billie Roberts (2020)

Also, 4-star LB Derek Boykins was in town for a visit Monday, per a source.

* The usual allotment of injured players were working on the side: Trey Smith, Todd Kelly Jr., Jauan Jennings, Darrin Kirkland Jr., and DJ Henderson.
