Just because Byrd is playing Saftey doesn't mean he is a lost cause good grief. That's like saying berry and warrior suck because they didn't last long at CB either. Y'all do recall shoops plan was to start Byrd at Saftey so that's 2 pretty dang good DCs that say Byrd skill set fits at Saftey.

Everyone took one all American game and ran with t similar to kyle Phillips hype machine went wild because of a few plays.

One thing to keep in mind Byrd was old for HS so maybe he isn't such a separation of talent on the same stage as people his age and the others catching up physically

As I've said on here a couple of times before, I've seen several players in Byrd's face during the game. For what I don't know, but it wasn't pretty. We've also had comments on here from posters that apparently he has a bad attitude and doesn't have much drive. Would a different coach get more out of him? Maybe. But it's clear to me that his limited playing time was on him.

On the other hand, I'm not convinced he's ruined yet.

Probably right..maybe he just doesn't like foosball. Either way a good coach would have gotten more out of him I think.

Without seeing exactly how it happened It's hard to take sides. Could been either side of the line imo

Exactly, Pruitt said when he plays corner that he watches the qb too much so he was moved to safety where he can look at the qb. Also he played mostly safety in high school. He was projected by recruiting services as a cb. And he played cb well in the all-star game.

I'm not worried about Byrd. He's got two of the best secondary coaches in college football in Pruitt and Kelly working with him everyday. If they can't make a player out of him, it's Byrd's fault.

Alright, so can someone tell me why this call & the call against UConn have gone viral? Same exact crew on both.

I mean I think it’s cool & all to see their reactions but people on twitter are legitimately acting like this is the best thing they’ve ever seen in their life. Just heaping praise on them for their professionalism even though the only words spoken in either video were by the play by play guy. Am I missing something?

I think he doesn’t want to give any players false encouragement like Butch did (how many guys did they talk up who never saw the field?) and also wants everybody on the roster to feel like they’re going to get a fair shot at proving themselves and moving up in or into the depth chart by September (whether that’s true or not).

Hopefully the team will respond well to Pruitt keeping things more in house and not using the media to send signals to players

...and Walter Johnson, Christy Matthewson, Honus Wagner and Babe Ruth. Additionally, Cobb and Matthewson served together in the Chemical Service in WW1 in Europe, where Matthewson was accidentally gassed, eventually leading to his death.

Just like on offense I think we need a balanced defense but I think run defense is more important than pass defense. At least if you can stop the run you have a chance of the opponent not connecting with their receivers or getting sacks or even occasionally accidentally intercepting their QB. I haven't yet made any estimates here either.

I could see the defense being as good as the 2015 unit if they stay healthy and Pruitt makes something out of the CBs.

No way the offense hits 2016 levels, though. Not in year one of a new scheme, with a QB competition going into fall camp, the depth we have on the OL, and the question marks at WR and TE. Highly doubt we have a RB tandem to match Kamara/Kelly either.


2016 was one of the most explosive offenses we’ve had in school history. Dobbs as a Senior finally learned to connect on the deep ball and Malone finally utilized his 4.4 speed. We’ll likely never have a more explosive backfield than Dobbs/Kamara (who were so good they could flat out cover up OL mistakes and struggles).


I’m not trying to neg on our guys or staff. But asking them to match that 2016 unit year one is setting yourself up for disappointment. Year one in this scheme I imagine we’re gonna try mostly work on clock management, ball control, and hopefully the light comes on for the guys and we learn to hit some home runs in the PA passing game or on the ground.

The defense will be better because it can’t possibly get worse. 2015 might be pushing it. I want to say we were 37th in total D that year. That’s pretty damn good. But, we just need to be physical. Last year’s defense was Charmin soft.

I will give Botch some credit...he knew how to mask bad offensive line play. And those 2015 and 2016 O-lines weren’t good at all. We’d get most of our rushing yards on outside zone plays from the shotgun and, of course, the read option. We’ll have some good tight ends and tackles (assuming Trey is healthy) so we’ll probably run outside with Chandler a lot this year.

In 2015, those outside zones would work really well until the defense would adjust and figure out that we couldn’t run up the gut effectively. Noticed that when I rewatched the OU and Arkansas games. Those outside zones destroyed OU and Arky, for awhile.

regarding the CB position being what it is, or isn't as the case may be, and thinking we had shamburger and byrd to kind of take the reigns....i guess that could still be the case when all is said and done...but the 'experiment being over' didn't appear to leave a lot of wiggle room, at least in byrd's case.

and if it's a byrd issue as breaker intimated, then it really is just what it is...and we'll move on.

The line about the experiment being over was kind of odd, IMO. Byrd has been practicing at Safety since like practice 2 or 3. Pruitt’s comments leading up to spring said they were gonna try Byrd “somewhere in the defensive backfield,” not at corner.

And of course he’s going to gen behind at least Abernathy and Warrior at this point there. Expecting Byrd to pass up one of those guys in 2 weeks of practice is unrealistic.


Honestly at this point my expectations for Byrd heading into 2018 aren’t high, but at the same point I do think we need to look at his position change in context.

We’ll lose at least 2, maybe 3 safeties after 2018. If Byrd can crack the 2 deep and show a little promise at safety, I doubt they run him off.
