Pruitt was quoted as saying he doesn't like to take his eyes off the ball enough to be a Cb. He had to witness that issue somewhere

He may not have two more years if he doesn't start producing somewhere. I hope he does, but he will get processed out if he doesn't. He better get to work.

It’s starting to look that way but we are early in Pruitt’s tenure. Will see where it goes from here.

anywho, my bigger issue with any of it was the continued bad news on our issues at CB, and having a kid that's supposed to be as good as Byrd has been reported to be, not working out (for whatever reason) at a position of such need, is frustrating.

the shamburger news is much less distressing to me because i do think he's a heck of a player, and will have an impact at either spot, nickel or corner.

just #'s wise, we're better off at nickel/safety than we are at corner.

Stupid stupid stupid..I hated Fulmer for promoting Sanders after that game, it showed how unprepared for that job he was right off the bat. It was Fulmers fault and it was the start of the downfall of the program.

I think we could have Deion at corner and Pruitt would still make it sound like we're screwed. That position is his baby and when they asked him about it the other day if any players were making him proud he said "It takes a whole lot to make me proud". He said to check after Fall. Haha. I do think we need some guys to step up and it is a concerning position, but it's possible some of these guys are doing better than what is being reported. JMO

He showed enough at WR in freshman year to see why they put him there. Then nothing from him last year at all.

I've always wondered if he is physical enough to play defense. We will see. I almost be he ends up back at WR.

He said it more generally though. Like, coming from WR a position where you're always looking at the ball it's an easier transition to safety because that's what yer used to. I don't remember him saying specifically he didn't like to take his eyes off the ball.

that's probably a very optimistic view...i'm for it mind you.

and i do probably think there's some merit to it, on some level.

He did. He followed it up by saying that's why he was more suited for safety

found this from Patrick Brown in Fingers day 2 practice recap:

Rising sophomore Shawn Shamburger, rising juniors Marquill Osborne and Baylen Buchanan and rising sophomore Terrell Bailey were among the other players who received plenty of repetitions during early cornerback drills.

this is per Hubbs on day 3:
Byrd has been working with Charles Kelly and the rest of the safeties this week and again worked there on Saturday. The rising junior played cornerback in high school and still might get a look at that position, but for now it appears his home is at safety. Those players worked on their drops in coverage and shedding blocks during Saturday's early periods.

Second-year defensive backs Theo Jackson and Cheyenne Labruzza continue to work with the safeties as well.

Per Simonton Day 4:

Later in practice, Tennessee’s LBs and DBs worked together on combo-coverages. The Vols were installing Alabama’s pass-matching scheme. Jeremy Pruitt, Kevin Sherrer, Charles Kelly and Terry Fair were all involved in the install. They split the field and worked two plays back-to-back. The start of the drill consisted of Quart’e Sapp at the WILL with Abernathy at safety and Baylen Buchanan at CB. On the other side, Nigel Warrior was at safety with Will Ignont at linebacker and Marquill Osborne at corner. Shawn Shamburger repped with the 2s, as did Theo Jackson at safety.

Here is the actual quote which alludes to them trying him at corner the first 2 days and switching him to safety and why. That direct quote from a coach not know for sugar coating, doesn't seem to be negative to me. Just seems like Pruitt has evaluated his skills and wants to put him in his best position regardless of need at CB.

“Lots of times when you take offensive players and move them to the defensive side, he’s used to looking at the quarterback,” Pruitt said. “Well if you’re a big man to man team like we are, you can’t guard your man and look at the quarterback. Tyler has really good ball skills and has a toughness about him. We felt like after two days that it might be his best position to actually play safety because you play with a lot of vision on the quarterback. He’s going to be able to use his natural ball catching ability.”
