Recruiting Forum Football Talk LVII

After watching clips and reading quotes, it is very refreshing to see we actually finally have a freakin real football coach and supporting staff who will do whatever is necessary to win. I was thinking realistically 6 wins, maybe 7, but as the spring progresses, I am adding another W just because we have a real coach now. I think if we stay healthy and continue to buy into the program, 7 wins is definitely attainable. GBO!

You think Bill will be the next UT President?

He recently said he had no interest in the position and removed his name from future consideration. If that changes, he would have the support of the current board. Non-voting members might present opposition, but Haslam appointed a majority of voting members. If the current board is vacated, he'll appoint the new members, too.

DiPietro is retiring soon and doesn't want to be on the wrong side of the Haslam family. Davenport would be securing her own position by supporting it since Bill would then be appointing ALL of the trustees. Neither DiPietro nor Davenport are dumb -- they have their own self-interests in this.

100% of our problems as an athletics program stem from this sort of thing.

Everyone has self interests and the goal isn’t to win but self preservation.

That’s why we suck at everything that matters.

Also, from reading through this stuff, you think Currie thought he had Mullen in the bag, and then Florida swooped in while he was in the Bahamas?

I think Currie was told to hire Schiano before he even officially became AD. Anything to do with Mullen was half-hearted lip service dressed up to look like due diligence.

Yeah, Currie was Schiano all the way. I think Currie thought Mullen would stick at MSU or make unreasonable demands that he could use to grease the Schiano hire. It seems clear that Currie worked around Davenport and most of the trustees, knowing there would be problems, but arrogantly believing he was untouchable. They got him in the end, though.

Currie’s arrogance on full display in the communications dump from last Thursday night.

Davenport’s emails and texts with Currie don’t give me the warm and fuzzy feelings.

She told him to stay the course and ignore the noise at one point. Then something changes and all of the sudden she’s trying to hold him accountable for going rogue.

These documents make me think she played both sides of the fence.

It's been on full display in every talk he ever gave and every meeting he ever had with donors. Managing to be off-putting and condescending while asking for money is a real skill.

She flipped when the politicians got loud

I just have a bad feeling that the Haslams still have plenty of sycophants in and around the university who want them back in power.

I would pin it on pride. You have individuals who are highly successful which leads to pride that they know what’s best in these matters. Unlike me, they can’t be good at everything.

Totally random but would y’all have rather hired Mike Leach or Mike Gundy? The more i look at gundy the less impressed i am with him.

I know we are in a better place now than before with Fulmer as AD, but I still don't get the warm and fuzzies about who's still in charge of our Athletic Department overall... Don't know another program in the country our size that is still this F'd up from a athletics standpoint...

Connecting the dots, this sort of scenario is certainly possible.

Leach...with one qualifier: hire a top defensive staff. I have mad respect for Leach for what he did at UK. He was the mastermind behind Mumme who gave us fits.

Sounds like a guy that can get these guys rallied around each other. Keeps it real. its probably a bit easier for players to buy into working harder when you a group of coaches with theirs backgrounds of winning championships they want to win and not big east and bowl
Championships. Like having the answer to the final exam you just got to memorize them

Davenport held off on signing the MOU. If she had signed it and pushed it through, Schiano would have been our coach. They would have whitewashed him with PR as best they could, but if the MOU had been fully executed, counsel would have advised UT to ride out the backlash.

On the field results are similar. Both are a bit nutty. Shouldn't have even entertained Gundy though considering he's at his alma mater and he'd just played us for a raise on the last go around.

Makes me wonder if she was playing both sides as long as she could, but when push came to shove she knew what was the right thing to do. Back that up with the decision to fire the Haslam’s yes man and hire Fulmer; she’s alright in my book.
