Jeremy Pruitt joined The Nation tonight with ESPN’s Chris Low and VolQuest.com’s Austin Price.

Here’s a quick recap of his comments...

* On what's been the most important offseason work for his team?

"Guys competing in everything they do. Defining everything in the organization. Creating a standard, and holding guys to that standard. It’s about creating the right habits. Going to class, how you train, how you eat, how you sleep. I think our guys are on their way to doing that."

* Pruitt said he's watched cut-ups of every individual player on the team from last season.

"I’ve looked at it a little bit, with a cut-up of every individual player. I wanted to see what I felt like their ability was. I didn’t look as much about production. But if it’s an offensive lineman, can he slide his feet? Can he bend? Can he take good angles?

A wide receiver, what’s his playing speed? Does he extend to catch a football? What’s his ability with ball in his hand. Does he compete when he don’t get the ball on run downs. Just like you would do on an eval on a high school player.

It gives you an indication on what kind of competitor they are or what their upside could possibly be."

* On his excitement level for spring practice starting Tuesday?

"I told my wife on Wednesday on spring break that I was ready to get back. It’s a good sign. I miss our guys. I’m excited about getting started. Everybody in the program is ready to get going."

* Tennessee will fully install the offensive and defensive schemes this spring. With the defensive schedule as follows.

"We’re going to stick to the plan."

Day 1: Middle of the field

Day 2: Cover 2

Day 3: Middle-Middle halves

Day 4: Quarters

Day 5: High red zone

Day 6: Low red zone, middle field review

Day 7: Split safety review

“You just kind of build it and have a teaching progression and a plan. We do the same thing with special teams and offense. I guess you would say that we’re putting in everything.”

* Pruitt is looking for competition this spring, from every position. He side-stepped quarterback question but simply noted that every guy gets the same amount of reps, even the walk-ons.

"That’s what the game of football is all about. You have to compete. The No. 1 competitor you have to go against is stand in the mirror and look at yourself.

Everybody in our organization will get the same amount of reps. Did note that the people that are “healthy” and are “here” need to take advantage of their opportunity.

* Pruitt was very complimentary of OL coach Will Friend.

"He was the first guy I called. It had nothing to do with our friendship. I got other friends who is in coaching, but I didn’t hire them. I tried to hire the best people. I feel like he is the best OL guy that we went against at Alabama. He does a nice job from a schematic standpoint. He’s very demanding."

* On his transition from DC to first-year HC.

"I got to be Jeremy Pruitt. That’s who I got to be. I’m not Nick Saban. I’m not Mark Richt. I’m not Jimbo Fisher. I got to be who I am."

It's going to be good. Will liberally use the mute button though I'm sure.

Same here. Don't need to hear it anyway, know the game well enough to trust what I see.

Tiger is getting too violent on his swing again. If he keeps it up he will be back on the DL at some point this season.

I am not sure I see it this way. Men's basketball took a huge step forward this year. In that tweet a couple of weeks ago, how many spring sports were ranked? 6?

I know we are coming off our worst football year, and last night was tough. But as more time passes, I think big picture will show that most of the sports are improving or continuing its success. This basketball year was fun, and I am trying not to let a 1 point loss ruin that.

I think football is further down than fans would like to admit, and the LVs just went over the cliff. MBB has improved under CRB and that's been awesome to see. But several players commented that the Vols' early exit from the NCAAT was a huge disappointment that kept the season from being great, and I agree with them. It was our chance to break through in a marquee sport and we couldn't get it done. So once again, we're back to "next year."

As my Avatar might demonstrate, I know a bit about this, especially since I wrestled for UT and later for the USA. Wrestling is the oldest sport in the Olympics and is one of the highest high school participation sports in the USA. For the kids who don't weigh 200+ pounds, run 4.4 40's, and can dunk at ease (i.e., the vast majority of athletes), it's tailor-made for them.

I always thought ice hockey was boring until I actually watched a game in person and I fell in love with it. Wrestling is the same animal. If you ever get to go see a college match in the Big 10 or Big 12, the place is electric and you'll get hooked quickly.

Btw, DRV, I've never "grabbed anybody in uncomfortable places" so if that's your thing, you might want to find another sport besides real wrestling.

I appreciate the information. I realize that I belittled something that a lot of people here enjoy. I apologize for that.

They have become the Loser Vols. Next year will be ugly. Sad to allow this to happen to Pat's program, but it's a trainwreck in motion-- and has been with Holly.

I'm done with BB for the year-- not watching another second of it.

I just don't understand how she cannot see how bad she is. She reminds me of Butch a little bit in that she is stubborn, won't adapt her "system," recruits pretty well, but, at the end of the day, should not be a head coach. If she loves her school, she needs to resign.

Guys I think you can blame me for our mens basketball. I never really watch CBB. But I did watch 2 games this year. When UT played UK in the SEC championship and their game last night. My apologies.

And the one and two seeds are gone. Just when the stars line up for us, Ivan Drago steps up and I must break you.

If there's anything that can possibly happen to make things more painful for UT, it will happen. Next up is KY making the final four out of our region.

Let’s lighten the mood.

Florida and Bama lost and Georgia hired Tom Crean. 😂

I’m not laughing at Crean to UGA. He will recruit Atlanta lights out. Tons of basketball talent here. The right guy can turn them into a force, just like Smart is doing with football.

That's my coach. Observed the elite for years and now does what he believes and knows to do from all of his experiences. Which is exactly how Saban, Richt and Fisher did it when they became HC's.

Damn, that's funny. Im over it. On to Preds and hockey and Braves baseball...and Vols baseball :'(

Braves should be better but think 2019 can be the start of something special. But honestly, none of us is over that loss. Will hurt for a little while. GBO
