Marvel's Black Panther

America didn't end slavery. America ended slavery in America, which was something it also started. If I started taking a baseball bat to the windows of every car I saw, and then stopped and demanded credit for stopping, I don't think anyone would be very sympathetic.

America isn't one of person with a baseball bat. It is an entire civilization that had a damn bloody Civil War with itself to change its entire ethos as it pertains to race and humanity. How many other countries would have done that? How many would have gone to war with itself to end a practice that was immoral and devalued human life?

Plenty would, and plenty more wouldn't have started said practice to begin with. If your argument is that Americans are inherently better people than everyone else, good luck with that. There's still a significant portion of this country that claims the Civil War wasn't even about slavery.

How exactly are you having to pay for it? And what is “it?” Segregation? All of our problems ended in the ‘60s? Lol.

People back then said the same thing. “Quit b*tching about how segregation and Jim Crow are “racist.” It’s separate but equal. Real racism ended with slavery, and stop trying to make me feel responsible for that. You know, that reeeeaaaaaaallllyy just ticks me off.”

EDIT: And I didn't single out "caucasians" one single time. I simply said that America presenting one race as subhuman for hundreds of years may ingrain some attitudes and practices into American society that weren't all magically cured in the '60s. I'm surprised that is a controversial statement or a reason to get defensive.

Fair enough.

Slavery didn't start with Americans, neither did racism.

Last time I checked this was the movies and music part of the forum. Somehow this has evolved into a conversation about slavery because people have a burr in their ass that if you don’t like the movie, apparently that makes people racist. On Rotten Tomatoes it is rated higher than Shawshank and 2 of The Godfather’s, which is probably ridiculous, but I haven’t watched the movie because I don’t go to many movies. The only superhero movies I’ve seen in the the theater recently were the last two Christopher Nolan Batman’s. I swear this country has gotten so damn sensitive that if you disagree that a movie isn’t good you’re racist. The Oscars thing from a couple years ago was ridiculous because all the best actors were white and everybody had to ***** and moan. “Oscars So White” You know what, how many NBA All Stars were white that year? Zero. Did anyone complain? No. You know why? Because there were no white players worthy of making the two teams.

Saw it last night and thought it was excellent. One of the better movies I had seen in a while.

Michael B Jordan stole the show for me. Looked up his filmography and see he’s going to be in a new Fahrenheit 451 movie. Looking forward to it.

That's not what the conversation has been about, at all...save for maybe some D4H posts (I skip over his, you should too).

It is safe to say you and history books have never met.

Maybe I got a little carried away. My bad. I saw this thread and read some stuff on twitter from people who actually have check marks make comments about racism being a part of this movie and I just don’t think in those terms. I’m not going to see it in the theater, not because I’m racist, it’s because Ive become cheap and don’t really care about comic books all that much. Not everything has to revolve around politics. You can’t talk about a movie or the NFL without it being involved recently, it’s entertainment. It becomes exhausting.

Lulz.

Its a movie forum that turned into a slavery discussion that has now turned into a basketball discussion.

I think Klay might be part white, but Steph isn’t I don’t think. Dell did well with Sonya. She’s a very good looking lady. I literally sat next to her at a Duke game once.

Really? I thought she was white lol. You're right, she is a good looking lady.

Nice. Did you ever get to meet D4H? Oh wait i forgot, he didn't go to Duke.

I’ve already destroyed him enough about attending Duke. I’m gonna let D4H be D4H. There are a lot of other players that I wouldn’t praise, but he picked a good one with Dobbs. So I’ll let him be.

I feel like there's an inside joke here that I need to know about...

D4H claims that he went to school at Duke but he was busted when he couldn't remember the name of the gym on campus. He tried to play it off by saying he forgot and went on a rant about racism/black lunch ladies.

For a while now I've been 100% convinced he doesn't mean a single word he says, he's just here to troll.

That sounds about right.. glad to have some clarification there. If u would've asked me what VN member did that, his name would've been on top of my list lol...

You do know you are rewriting history with this post right?

The civil war was not about slavery. It was about keeping the union together. Lincoln is famously quoted as saying he would keep the union together with or without slavery. The key was the union.

You really think millions of white northerners who held views as racist as southerners regarding black people would die if the expressed goal was to free black people from bondage?

Also you do know that nearly 100 years of sanctioned Jim Crow segregation followed the civil war? So regardless of this noble spin you are giving the civil war, the events that directly followed it contradict your point.

The civil war was no noble war to help free an oppressed people and move America forward when it came to race. It was just like every other war. It was about power and land. The United States was not gonna let the South take away half of its landmass for nothing. It was gonna keep the union together one way or another.

I said you must’ve played ball at a certain gym that is on Duke’s campus.D4H responded that he didn’t know what gym I was referring to. Which was interesting.Everybody who has ever gone to Duke or played pick up games there knows exactly what gym I was referring to. D4H seems to be an interesting guy and life is too short to be critical of people that have never done anything to me .
