It's a rifle that's used to assault. Technically, it's an accurate use of the word combination.

If I slapped you in the face with a 18 inch purple dildo, wouldn't an "assault dildo" be an accurate descriptor of the instrument of the attack?

Yep. Both sides were equally armed. Because it would be dumb as hell to stand toe to toe against machine guns with our 1700’s muskets that were in vogue when this was stated.

And dig up your ole buddy Google. I think it’s one of the SCOTUS rulings that used the verbiage “weapons readily available at the time”. I’m lazy and don’t want to dig it up again but the intent is for similar arms be of the type readily available to the troops also be available to the citizens. And that went all the way till 1934 when you FINALLY had to pass a check and get a stamp to keep ole Betsy your trusty Thompson SMG!
