Like actual root causes? How about we start with them instead of bans or more ineffective regulation?
One can make it more secure without having to make it into a "fortress" so to speak. Common sense security measures are simple and generally inexpensive along with a good plan in case it does happen. Door alarms and camera monitoring on remote doors would be highly beneficial...
As long as someone is monitoring it.
I don't subscribe to the militarization nonsense. Zep keeps bringing that up and it's still not relevant. As well as being quite ignorant to be honest.
The root causes are being addressed. Usually not in a way that makes the right happy. Guns will continue to be one of the variables to be considered. The whole "you can pry it out of my cold dead hands" resistance is going to be counterproductive to your cause in the long run.....which is turning into a short run.
Any approach that omits an honest discussion of the merits of gun control -- at least in terms of creating ways to keep those who are mentally ill or depressed from buying one -- is worthless.
Not that we even consider band aid approaches, but that's not enough. Tourniquet time.
Following up on GV's point about more armed law enforcement officers on school campuses:
In fairness, it would be very expensive. So that is a consideration. And it would only protect schools, not movie theaters, churches, and concerts.
Kind of like the old joke about being paranoid.
Look, we can continue to stick our fingers in our ears and pretend it doesn't happen.
Or we can take some of the 99% of cops that don't cause trouble and help protect our children.
Yes, that's why they have school resource officers, who are licensed LEOs.
This guy evidently came to school and managed to get in carrying a gun. He's been a student there so he knew how to find a way in.
I hate the idea of turning schools into armed camps, but that may be the only option. And to get in you have to go through airport like security.
There have been some good ideas in this thread. But this is not one of them. But I'll meet you halfway.
Increased funding for something you mentioned earlier: remote doors, CCTV of entrances, monitored by SROs. I'll add in metal detectors.
While I wish he would shut his his incessant gun grab rant I hope the mods leave him be because he has a right to his opinion and I think that would be unnecessary censorship.
We have 42 public schools in the county. I'm not sure we have that many extra officers sitting on the side of the road waiting to write tickets. And the ones who are doing that, need to stay. You guys have made it a point hundreds of times that cars and accidents are a much bigger cause of fatalities. Many (most) of those due to speeding, texting while driving, etc... (you know, things that a cop on the side of the road would be looking for). If you want to raise taxes in order to hire more LEO's in order to put a couple of more in each school, I am 100% on board. It's the kind of thing I've been advocating for years.
Hire people. The TSA does it everyday.
