Mass shooting of the week, high school in parkland, FL.

Just the opposite.

I work in that area and no, not a good choice.

I work for the Pirates Spring Training in Bradenton and I can't image OSA Global (the hired security firm) being able to handle this type of thing.

The school should have the option imo.

A private firm could tailor their security to the school and only the protection of the kids. Cops will simply be looking to bust kids for every little thing.

DTH, you can be reasonable from time to time. This needs to be one of them.

A private security firm is the last choice you want in schools. Schools will go to the lowest bidder and I can flat guarantee you they will get the bottom of the barrel. You think some cops are bad? Get a bunch of wannabe cops patrolling the schools. And that's exactly what would happen.

You should much prefer cops to be in those schools. And I seriously doubt your fears would be confirmed.

I just feel it should be left to the local communities to decide. That means individual parents and the school itself deciding what’s best for their interests. Not some bureaucrat. If it’s cops in a local area, so be it. Give people the choice and let them decide.

The people wouldn't ever get the choice when city/county managers and the school board are looking over budgets.

And honestly, I feel most people would overwhelmingly pick the police over a private security firm.

Yes, that's why they have school resource officers, who are licensed LEOs.

This guy evidently came to school and managed to get in carrying a gun. He's been a student there so he knew how to find a way in.

I hate the idea of turning schools into armed camps, but that may be the only option. And to get in you have to go through airport like security.

That ship sailed after Columbine.

Meh. I was a sophomore when Columbine. I never felt unsafe after that. There were school shootings before Columbine. One a few years before was just 100 miles from me. Barry Loukaitis. Never felt unsafe.

And that’s exactly what scares me. We will essentially be teaching our young to submit for their own safety.

Schools are perfect places to kill. They’re defense free zones. They pack a bunch of people into many tiny spaces with one entrance/exit unless you can manage to have a window and pop it out. They’re designed to make fish in a barrel. Elementary, middle, high, college. All the same.

I don't subscribe to the metal detection going into schools (there are always ways in regardless) and I'm wondering what happened in this situation that the officers were unable to respond to.

My whole thing against a private security firm is the distinct lack of training. You can claim LEOs aren't that trained, but let's take your Armpit State's requirements for armed and unarmed security:

Security Guard Requirements in Alabama | Security Guard Training - Your Security Guard Training Resource

Typically, at a minimum, you will usually be required to meet the following criteria.

Unarmed:

Must be at least 18 years of age;
No felonies or violent criminal convictions;
Must not have a disqualifying mental illness;
Must be physically fit for the position they are applying for;
A high school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent certificate.

Armed:

Must be at least 21 years old
High school diploma or GED
United States citizen or legal alien
No felony convictions or any crime involving the illegal use of weapons
Successfully pass a criminal background check, including fingerprinting
Pass drug testing
Good moral character
Alabama driver’s license
Good physical conditioning
Pistol permit from Alabama State

And four hours of firearms training for armed. Two hours a year of "refresher" training.

Alabama Security Regulatory Board

Bad idea. I wouldn't even trust my own company's armed division to protect my children. My own company. Much less any other out there that isn't Triple Canopy or Aegis.

And this is why there are 25 Police Officers at Pirate Spring Training games in addition to the private security on hand.

Granted the footprint of a Spring Training Facility is fairly small there are still a lot of people gathered in a consolidated area.
