Mass shooting of the week, high school in parkland, FL.

There's a stat floating around about the number of school schootings which is bogus IMO. It even includes an incident w a bb gun. Yet it still gets trotted out by people intending to deceive. They're a large part of the problem

Yeah, I had to caveat that post in the opening statement. The gist was that, one would hope, the criteria at least made things comparable within the same data. Assuming that's true (which could very well be argued) something is causing a big uptick in such events. This in spite of the fact it's too recent a trend to just say "guns" as we've had lots and LOTS of guns around prior to the start of this century and, as cited, have become almost insane with "zero tolerance" policy regarding anything that (quite literally) even resembles a weapon of any kind in schools. Yet here we are and many people's first reaction is head straight to inanimate objects as the primary culprit.

This is just as extreme as banning all guns. And infringing on personal rights.

How is it infringing personal rights? U think u can be a cop without a gun? Maybe u can , but I've never seen it.

If you don't want to carry and you are a teacher ? Quit, it's now part of the job, nobody would force them to be a teacher anymore

Because it happens so often, right?

So, you'd rather have schools unprotected because of your irrational hatred of police. Brilliant.

Furthering the police state is a bad idea. Might as well have curfews and military patrols on the streets checking papers.

Why not try to address the reason this has become so commonplace over the last 15-20 years instead of putting more guns in schools?

Ok, I'm not digging down into the contextual relevancy of what should/shouldn't be considered a "school shooting" but since the criteria is supposedly the same the numbers should be at least somewhat relevant among each other.

School shootings in the United States - Wikipedia

The WORST decade in the last century (1990's) saw 62 shootings. With the better part of 2 years still on the clock in this decade that list shows 148.

Now realize that gun paranoia is so rampant in schools now that you can have a kid suspended for chewing his pop-tart into a gun shape and yet...

I can remember when it wasn't just normal but ubiquitous for boys to have pocket knives in school, often openly worn on the belt. Kids in the South/Mid West would bring guns to school for hunting after classes. Even if there IS something to discuss regarding guns it's a long way downstream from what in the hell is going on with people willing to simply kill for no fathomable* reason. The simple truth is people's willingness to commit these kinds of atrocities is outstripping anything as myopically simple as the inanimate objects used. Until we can get some useful grasp on what's actually driving the acts themselves most gun control is just trying to cut heads off the Hydra.

*Wanting to kill people isn't new and often you can at least "understand", on some level, why the spouse offs the cheating partner or the guy kills the person stealing money from them or what have you. (let's not confuse understanding with condoning) This unhinged "people are gonna die" thing is just different.

Two things.

One, even if it is not a perfect solution, it doubtless would reduce the number of casualties in a case where a mentally ill person decided to attack a school.

Two, just because we ought to also deal with mental illness does not mean we shouldn't also reduce the mechanism by which this is so deadly,

Note: sheriff on tv now says 17 dead. You cannot ever make a decent argument that this guy could have killed that many people without a gun.

Putting trained law enforcement officers into a position to protect our children isn't "furthering the police state." It's actually putting them back into the role they should be performing as community servants.

I don't think we can shoot our way out of this problem.

I'd be interested to hear rational and Constitutionally supportable arguments for what exactly the underlined suggests. (that's an honest question, no condescension)

ok everyone is talking gun control, mental health, etc. why hasn't anyone bring up the media role in this by giving what this loser wants and by motivating other miserable fools but playing "top this"?

Won't ban our way out either.... only thing that can be done is, eliminate the shooting fish in a barrel..

This crap doesn't happen where people can carry... only gun free zones..

I never mentioned anything about banning more guns. It won't work, there are too many in circulation. And with 3D printing you can just make your own.

The solution to the problem of too many gun deaths is to pretend like it doesn't happen? Come on.

Is the answer capital punishment?
Sentencing to death when the demented perpetrator survives is a start.

NO i mean it wouldn't hurt if the media would step back and stop making these loser as some form of anti-heroes just to only inspire the someone to come up w/ something more heinous.
