Kahlil declares for draft

As a rival fan who just wants to keep tabs on other teams and enjoys mostly reading the posts here, has anyone looked at the scholarship crunch at UT next year? seems like with seniors and early departures the roster will be short of the 85 limit (assuming 25 signed this year). But again, i'm less plugged in then all of you maybe there are much less seniors on last years roster.

If I was a scout for an NFL team, you would know it. That team would win the Super Bowl every year.

My player evaluation skills are that elite.

I'm curious. How often did you focus on the battle between the lineman at the line of scrimmage during the game versus just watching the ball?

Cause I doubt many of you that are criticizing Kahlil about his performance actually ever watched him. You just watched the ball on every possession. And you assumed that because he wasn't disrupting the ball that he must not be doing his job. That thinking couldn't be further from the truth.

Kahlil's job wasn't ball disruption. His job was to take on blockers so others could disrupt the ball. It was because he took on double teams that other defensive lineman like Shy Tuttle were able to make those splash plays in the backfield that got them recognition from the average fan that is just watching the ball on every play.

Kahlil's draft position will show ya'll just how well he did his job here at Tennessee.

A player leaving early should not go if you’re a late rounder. However, maybe daddy promised him he’d draft him by 4th round.

Kahlil's job is not to make splash plays. His job because of his body type is to be the guy that takes on double teams so other guys can make splash plays. Those plays you're talking about that Shy Tuttle made that were so impressive happened because Kahlil was the guy the center was doubling and Shy was able to match up one on one against the guard and beat him with his quickness.

Shy played the 3-technique while Kahlil played the 1-technique. The 1-technique in the 4-3 defense lines up in between the center and guard. His job is to take them both on. Taking on this double team allows other defensive lineman to match up one on one. That is what Kahlil did most of his career here at Tennessee. He was the 1-technique taking on double teams.

The 3-technique, on the other hand, lines up between the guard and tackle. Because the 1-technique is taking on two players, this allows the 3-technique to use his quickness to shoot the gap inbetween the guard and tackle to make plays in the backfield. Its usually the 3-technique defensive tackle that gets lots of sacks and tackles for loss.

You guys seriously know nothing about this sport you claim to follow.

I mean its one thing to not know the difference between a 1-technique and 3-technique defensive tackle in the 4-3 defense. But to not even know that Taylor Lewan and Joe Thomas are left tackles that will never match up with a defensive tackle like Kahlil unless there is a stunt is shocking.

Seriously this is SHOCKING.

Good luck to the kid. As I've said, not sweating any departures as it serves to hasten the roster being turned over. The sooner the better.

You know what's actually sad. If Kahlil ends up being a 10-year starter in the NFL (as I expect), you guys will still say he was a bust because he didn't rack up sacks and TFLs when that is not his job.

Kahlil is a 0 or 1-technique at the next level. His job like it was in college will be to take on double teams so that his teammates are free to make plays. The NFL players you gotta look at when trying to find a comparison for Kahlil McKenzie is Vince Wilfork and Pat Williams. Those guys are the prototype 0 and 1-tecniques. Guys who didn't put up huge box score numbers that the average fan could follow but who real football people knew were putting in work.

I think he will be just fine at the next level, probably not on pass rushing but as a run stopper!! Like Big Dan McCullers for the Steelers.

He was out of shape and lazy alot of times just my opinion. He never remotely lived up to his billing....

He got no pressure on the QB and allowed holes the size of Mack trucks for opposing teams run game.

I hate to see hm go. He is a big body that takes up a lot of space. He will be missed. I think he will be drafted and that he has a good chance of playing in the League because of his size and knowledge. We lose a lot of experience with him gone. Our new Freshmen may be more athletic, but they have young bodies and need to mature to be really competitive.

This is a big blow to our defense.
