Tennessee doesn't play a true 5. Obviously Grant and Kyle are our starting forwards, and if you were forced to put labels on them 1-5, I'd say Kyle is the 5 simply because Grant can step out and play outside. He has that skill set and Kyle doesn't.

And Kyle can't post up.

In our offense they are interchangeable. That's why we don't have to focus on getting a 5 star type guy which was said at the onset of all of this

The reason they are interchangeable is because we don't have a five. Which is what I said from the beginning. If we had a five, maybe they wouldn't be interchangeable. And they're really not interchangeable seeing that Kyle is not an inside scoring threat.

Kyle Alexander is a 5 when he's on the floor for Tennessee. Just like Kevin Durant is a 5 in certain lineups for Golden State and LeBron for Cleveland.

These traditional positions are out of date anyway. I suppose Demarcus Cousins is a point guard because he brings the ball up for New Orleans sometimes.

This argument is ridiculous.

Get out of the dark ages man. There is no such thing as a 5 that stays on the block these days.

Yep. Exactly

Damn good day. JJ Petersen,Titans win, Vols beat KY hoops, 3 bottles of wine with sweet thang. Goodnight guys.

Plus a Preds win on the road against one of the top teams in the conference. Yeah, it was a perfect sports day for me. I'm still basking in the glow this morning.

That's bull**** and you know it. I asked you last night and you never answered. Should your 5 be able to post up and score with their back to the basket?

It is not ridiculous. Grant is the only player that offensively is scoring threat in the low post. He is basically our five. You just said it yourself with Durant and LeBron.

I don't watch a lot but I get a game in every week or two. So are you saying no one post up anymore?

I'm saying the back-to-the-basket post up game is becoming more obsolete by the day. In the old days, it was a requirement to be a center, now it's not. Some players still use it but, again, it's about match-up and not "you're the center, you're supposed to do this."

Shaun Livingston makes a living posting up smaller PG's.

The point is you're assigning characteristics of the prehistoric "5" to the modern "5". Kyle Alexander is the 5 for Tennessee because that's how Rick Barnes lists him in the starting lineup and he guards the others team's 5. It's that simple.

Invol... If you have any decency, please stop engaging him. I don't know squat about what y'all are talking about and I imagine Bruin is frantically googling information as the argument continues. You know he will argue the counter of any positions until the cows come home. Please stop. For the rest of us.

Thanks.

Let's make this simple

Voly is dead ass wrong and this entire board is telling him that but he won't stop. It isn't even debatable

For us the 5 is much more about being a rim protector than scoring with his back to the basket. Grant Williams picks up that slack.
Alexander is a pretty solid rim protector

If we played old school women's basketball where you had offensive and defensive players I'd agree with you. This all started with my assertion that we could use a dominate 5 to take heat off Grant, on the offensive end. You said we had a dominate 5 in Kyle Alexander. I said Kyle Alexander wasn't a dominate five and Grant played more of the 5 role (back to the basket, post up player than kyle). That's when you said I was stupid and knew nothing of basketball. I then asked you what you thought the role of the 5 should be and your response was all on the defense side. Since we were discussing taking some heat away from Grant that really didn't answer my question. What skill set do you want in your 5 on the offensive side? Do you want someone that can post up and move defenders and score from the low post? Do you want a player that shoots jumpshots? Do you want a player that can create off the dribble? Do you want a player that can move defenders off the block and can get offensive rebounds? Kyle really doesn't have the skill set, offensively, of a true 5. Grant, at 6'5" has more of that skill set.

Do we need a 5 that can score down low with his back to the basket, move people around and rebound? I say yes, you say no. Well that's debatable and I won't argue that point. I think a true big man would be a huge asset to this team but I can agree to disagree, but to say that Kyle Alexander checks hardly any of the boxes of a true 5 is ludicrous.

Old school hoops seems to be in your wheel house. Like I said get out of the dark ages

We have a 5 that is blocking shots as a rim protector at a very nice clip. On that puts him in the league leaders of rim protectors. He also shows good rebounding skills at times and scores enough to help. He's a solid role playing 5

I'm not wrong. It's an opinion. I've challenges you on several occasions to find me a center, a 5 that is Kyle Alexander's body type and while this will be difficult, find me one that doesn't post up and doesn't score with his back to the basket.
