My concern is two fold:
#1, I was getting the feeling that Thomas was a part of an attempt to have a support staff that was similar to Alabama's. Obviously, they are doing something right that the rest of college football is not. It is not like Saban, by himself, is so much better than everyone else. Losing him, and finding out that this was more Fulmer's idea than Pruitt's, makes me wonder if my assumption about Pruitt's plan was wrong.
#2, my understanding was that Thomas was going to be a really big help in recruiting, especially in the increasingly more crucial mid-state area of Tennessee.
I understand that Pruitt has other people who he has already pegged to do a lot of what Thomas was going to be doing. So, maybe my #1 may not be an issue.
On the surface, it looks like bad misstep, but only time will tell. For all we know, the fallout may be minimal to none.
The problem here is pretty simple. College head coaches are control freaks. The GM position actually runs the football program while the Coach runs the team. Which isnt bad because it takes a lot of responsibility off of the coaches plate so all the coach has to do is coach and recruit.
I think adding a GM adds structure and oversight. An extra level of checks and balances. At a huge program with as much money as we have. Thats necessary but people barely want New Jerseys so i dont expect them to think ahead with something as big as this.
I feel like this was largely overrated....
Move on and lets let Pruitt handle this the way hed like with the people hed like. IMO the idea of Thomas being a GM as a necessity is like the guy from office space that was the people person!
How can this be true? Not believing this
