I do agree, they did kill off MY Star Wars. I honestly don't know where this will go, and I feel somewhat less vested in where it IS going after this movie.
Now, taking away my years of Star Wars fandom, and seeing it through an 11 yr old and 6 yr old's eyes, I thought the movie was great. They loved it. You get Finn, Rey, Kylo and Poe, each doing their own thing. The movie tells its own story, and has little throwbacks to the old movies, but it goes off it its own direction. It is just that, that direction is not the way I had it in my head it should go. Does it have a MacGuffin, and things that don't make sense to me? Yes. My kids didn't really care nor think that deeply about it. Also, they have never seen Battlestar Galactica, which this felt like at times.
I think Kylo says it best. Let the past die. Kill it.
So just got home and here's my take.
I'm in the middle. It's not the worst SW movie; not even close. It's still better than all the prequels. But those saying it's the best and better than ESB....please. Just stop with that nonsense. I don't even think it's better than TFA or Rogue One.
Most of the spoilers I read turned out to be true or mostly true, but on screen they played out better than when I just read them. There are a few facepalm moments in a way and speaking of the prequels, there were a few sequences that reminded me way too much of them.
Overall I'll give it a 7/10. I'm seeing it again Christmas Day.

Damn I was kind of excited about this movie. Now, not sure I'm even going to bother.
I think it's still worth watching if you're a SW fan. I'm not as negative about it, but at the same time I can see why people don't like it. And again, I laugh at anyone calling this better than ESB; not even remotely close.
i actually thought phantom menace was decent. Liam neeson was solid and the action/fight at the end of the movie was good. Was plain to see it was headed down hill with jarjar and the clown show in the senate tho. Force awakens just took to the pc high road way too early and started to kill off my childhood without letting me down easy. Disappointing doesnt describe...

I agree on Phantom Menace. I think it's better than Attack of the Clones, which is the one I think is the worst. Yes Jar Jar is terrible and Jake Lloyd's acting is awful, and de-mystifying the Force and making Anakin have a virgin birth was stupid. But the pod racing was cool and the Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul lightsaber battle was worth it. Plus at least Lucas used real sets and locations; he screwed that up going full video game in the next 2.
I think they delved too much into the lovey-dovey in AOTC. However, ROTS was damn good IMO. Except the horrid acting by Hayden Christensen and the all too convenient and quick way Anakin/Vader converted to the Dark Side.
