Youre very eager to dismiss the these people dont miss type statements as being more broad, or indicative of intention, than you likely should be. Likely because you want to believe him. And again, I fully get that. I wanted to believe him too, but whereas you approached his arrival with cautious optimism - willing to use reason (and you seem very reasonable) to justify his statements and overall narrative to fit some larger momentum in something we will very likely never know true, concrete details of - I approached his arrival with skeptical optimism (in the sense that what he was saying, I wanted said result but wouldnt truly allow myself to believe what he was implying about himself and role).
It can be one or the other. It can also be a gray area like you said. But I was merely pointing out that extremes do exist in the situation and given what weve been given, one extreme is just as valid as the other at this point.
