Official Jon Gruden Thread XLIX

Like someone said earlier if it turns out to be Pruitt, the Fulmer hire was nothing more than a ploy to calm down the rabid outcry after the Schiano leaks.

We have been played.

Why should the University of Tennessee continue to be the experiment grounds for unproven coaches to take their licks, and then go somewhere else?

Oh well, hope our academic side can stay strong .

It seems to work out for quite a few teams here lately. Seems like the past 2 HC have not faired so well have they? I think he will do great here and with proper staffing which I believe he can assembly a great staff he will win big here

That is being an adult ya know. Being able to realize your disappointment but still able to support the coach UNTIL he gives us reason not to. I want Gruden just as much as anyone but after the way this coaching search has been totally screw over by the UT AD, we do need to pull together or UT will go so far down the drain the Robert Neyland himself couldn't fix it.

Think we are there. If last season doesn't show it as so, then we have differing opinions of just what is so far down the drain, and if this last 10 days doesn't scream pathetic don't know what is then. We are the laughingstock of the entire country, football fans and non football fans.

Two things
1. You haven't heard from the UTAD Phillip Fulmer
2. You haven't heard from Jon Gruden

Just a lot of chatter from other places.
With that I say, "Gruden 'til it ain't!!!

All head coaches were not a head coach at some point, duh. Can't recall someone becoming a head coach without being an assistant or coordinator of some kind. You don't just show up and become a college head coach. I think the point is that we don't want to convert someone into a head coach. We want a standing or at least someone with extensive head coaching experience AND was able to win.

It's absurd. All those schools, schools in the playoff, did it. But here at Tennessee where we just lost 8 games, we are too good for that.

If you think the man can coach then go ahead.

I'd rather go for potential all day than someone who has proven they are a run of the mill coach like Miles or Doeren.

So fans like you are not willing to give him a chance? And you have no flaws in your character? And dont need to talk to former players I will let this hire play out. Everyone can be forgiven and I think he will be fine and surround himself with a great staff and win at a high rate. One question for you if his past is so bad why has it not hendered him at Alabama?

He was there ONE year. He was at GA ONE year. He was at FSU ONE year. Every one of them a lateral move (well, not to FSU). In the business world, this would be a huge red flag for a hire. There are 4 million?? reasons and a buyout as to why this hire shouldn’t “play out.”

Fair point. But after what happened last week perhaps we can be the change agent promoter for the future.

Or we can just accept that after everything that's happened in the past week that the alumni (and fans) voice really is never going to be heard.

Think the latter is going to be more apparent in a few years....maybe. Maybe we get the surprise of the year and get our guy, we wait.

The big winner in this is Hubbs. He has had a long standing relationship with Fulmer since his days as a coach. I believe someone in his family used to also work in the AD when Fulmer was coach as well.

He will be the more accurate reporter moving forward

We have been played.

Well if that is the case, two can play at that game. I will not give UT one dime in tickets or merchandise.

Not until it’s done IMHO. Then we move on.

Mink's right. We're on until a coach is announced.

I've lived in this thread and thoroughly enjoyed VN the past few weeks. But, the last 24 hours have been the lowest it's been since thread XVII got started. Gruden or not, it's been a blast. I'm proud to be a VN member. Keep hope alive, we can gripe later.

GO VOLS

Roy Moore likes this post.

Maybe he was and is trying to better himself. He also has said that he is wanting a chance to run a program which we are giving him. As for the buyout if he is happy and the fanbase gets behind him I dont think he will want to leave. So my question is will you or will you not back him as a head coach?

Stop with this nonsense about boosters sitting in on interviews. Given the timing of the Hall of Fame event, I think its entirely possible that some of our boosters met a few of these candidates socially and somehow that's gotten twisted to sound like they were in on an interview. But that's it... period.

Jayson Swain on his show has said that Fulmer has reached out to a lot of the coaches that many of you are complaining about him not going after. So, it's not that Fulmer wants to go the coordinator route, but that's just about all that will be willing to take the job. Fulmer does not want Kiffin, so that's out. This is the reality, doesn't mean we have to like it. Look at it this way, they'll have plenty of money to get a good staff.

That's exactly what was said about the last two coaches we have had. And it worked out the same for both. Failures.
