Steele might very well get the job, but some of you are only hearing from Hubbs and others what you want. He is saying the Steele isn't the front runner and lists other names just as often as Steele, but some of you act as if we have already held the coronation.

There is something up with les not getting interviews since he’s been available. We’re not the only school passing him up.

Bruin,

Who do you think will be hired. Who are your top two you think it will come down to.

Not who you want but who you think?

I think Steele will be the hire because Fulmer wants a hard nosed defensive guy and he trust him.

I hope it's either Venables or Pruitt.

Morris is next in my mind

But besides this year, Steele's defenses have been so soft....

Yeah Hubbs mentioned Schiano. He also mentioned Mullen who allegedly was our guy until Frost turned down Florida and Kelly went to UCLA.

He mentioned the candidates that could happen. IMO Steele is going to be a backup plan. Yeah he’s a candidate and that’s why Hubbs is mentioning him but there are things that have to occur for him to get the job.

Just my opinion that doesn’t fit the freak out narrative. Sorry. Now back to the show.

First, what do you mean you’re never doubting Hubbs after the Schiano mess? Secondly, the bolded would be terribly disappointing.

Hubbs hinted at Schiano all along when Currie was in charge but we all ignored him thinking no way it would really happen. He's been doing the same thing with Steele for awhile now.

Unless Phil hits some kind of home run it's going to be Steele IMO.

OT but TBA is gonna be fun when UNC rolls in. Tennessee Basketball sent out a cryptic tweet about checkering the Tommy bowl.

Have heard some people say he never has a specific plan for any school in the interviews. It's basically "I'd do what we did at LSU." He never has an answer when they ask him how he'd tweak this or change that.

Highlights from the coaching search so far....

Hopefully it goes differently today.

Ameridote!

He has been DC for Ohio St and UGA plus 3 NFL teams and he is 45, yet you wanted Dave Doeren. He was also an interim HC in the NFL and has killed it in Atlanta in recruiting.

I’m sure he could kill it in recruiting, which is nice, but eventually that’s going to dry up if you can’t bring the goods on the field, especially with this fanbase riding you hard.

The only reason Tucker has been a DC for three NFL teams at his age is because those teams all sucked and he kept getting fired. So he ended up on Kirby’s defensive staff at Bama and followed him to UGA for the promotion. His defense is good this year because the roster is absolutely loaded with upperclassmen who will be drafted, including a few guys who could’ve left last year.

Also, to reiterate, I did not want Doeren.

I hope I’m wrong, but you can’t just take Hubbs’s word at face value. He keeps throwing out other names too, but there’s only one who has been there all along and who he keeps referring to as “a real possibility.”

Fulmer probably ask Les, "What's your vision for the program?" After Les told him, he probably thought WTF?

For better or worse, this is Fulmer’s search. Other than having coached football, Fulmer really has no qualifications to run a coaching search. Coming to New York and running it while the Football Foundation is going on shows that Fulmer’s knowledge of how the world works traces back to an era of flip phones as opposed to smart phones.

So who would be likely candidates? Look for coaches who would fit in Fulmer’s mold. He’s keen on younger candidates and has shown a lean toward defensive ones. Look for SEC coordinators like Georgia’s Mel Tucker and Auburn’s Kevin Steele to be targets, as Fulmer will value experience in the league.

Mike Leach’s name has cooled considerably here. The only thing more certain than Tennessee not hiring Jon Gruden is that Fulmer won’t hire Lane Kiffin, as he was not impressed by Kiffin’s year in Knoxville. (He wasn’t the only one, but there’s a strong disdain there.)

Other names that could end up being bandied around are SMU’s Chad Morris, Toledo’s Jason Candle and Memphis coach Mike Norvell. Former LSU coach Les Miles is not a candidate.

I think it’s just a safe name that Brent knows he can report and maybe be right.

The only thing that gives me hope re: Steele is that it’s not done yet. There’s no reason for it not to be done at this point if we aren’t at least going through a legitimate process with other candidates. Phil could just be trying to give the illusion of trying, but that’s too conspiracy theory for me — if it’s going to be Steele no matter what, you just hire him and let him recruit.

So, I guess, I feel like there’s a chance it’s somebody else, but sure sounds like Hubbs thinks Steele is the most likely.
