Sumlin is a much better man than Butch also. Honest, integrity, gets along with his players well, had the guts to do a press conference. Butch hasn’t said a thing

It doesn’t matter what happens really because it is painfully obvious we don’t have a commitment to winning. We have a commitment to being comfortable.

I agree,

Our University is more concerned about academics than athletics. They only want a clean comfortable program that isn't going to cause any negative publicity and will cause fans to be interested enough to fill seats in Neyland.

That is why they keep going after mediocre coaches like
Butch Jones (Police chief son) Greg Schiano (Drill Sargent type coach) Doroen (Butch Jones 2.0)

Anybody else think Sumlins name was injected to get the fan base talk off of the Haslams?

Lots of discussion about Sumlin after Doeren turned us down instead of "Out with the Haslams".

Is that not what this coaching search was supposed to be looking for? A better coach that could make us a consistent football team. This program is not currently ready to hang with the big boys. I wish we were, but the truth is we still aren't there.

Please separate program from “dumb-ass in charge”. Program includes facilities, budget, resources, and fans. The program is fine. The idiots pulling the strings are a different story.

everyone is so worn down, I think we would all lay down and concede if it were Sumlin, Miles, a Steele/Tee type combo, Morris, Leach, or Brohm popping back up...

Kiffin can suck it, but if I knew for an absolute FACT, I mean everyone standing at the podium type 'ish, if they were to pull a Kiffin/Tee/Steele type thing where there was TN blood in there, I would be okay I guess, only from a recruiting standpoint.

Hubbs at least tries. Both are lost.

Do you not think that Sumlin doesn't know that Chavis' inability to build and call a defense is the reason he is unemployed today? Geez, Jimmy.

Jimmy Hyams is an old tool in the box that is worn out and needs replacing, but you keep around just in case. His comments on Sumlin in the early segment were really stupid. He then follows it up talking about Kevin Steele being a candidate and saying nothing negative about him. They still haven't learned a thing. They just don't believe the core fans know about football. They think the loud, stupid outliers are the core fans.

Any of us could pull somebody's best year out of an analysis to make a guy look worse and make a case for not hiring a guy not named Saban or Meyer. Sumlin takes care of one side of the ball and is a quality recruiter and person. He has to hire a quality DC/staff (No Chavis) that removes the issue on the other side. He picks up at least a win a year more by being in the East with even a mid-performing D.

I would ride with Sumlin.

Yep. I hate baggin on chief because he’s a vfl and by all accounts seems to be a really good guy, but if anything bring him as LB coach.

Even when he was at UT, there were times when he had really good defenses but there were also times he cost us games.

Brett McMurphy is now on Memphis radio. He said Sumlin did something at A&M that hadn't been done in 60 years. He said that A&M thinks they are more than what they are. They aren't Alabama. He thinks Sumlin could take our job.

McMurphy is correct. They've had an inferiority complex for decades going back to the Southwest Conference days. Little brother to Texas. Even Arkansas and LSU lead them head to head all time in series wins. Sumlin needed a current period DC - not Chavis.

Sumlin was 9-3 by my math vs the East over 6 seasons. 1 loss to Florida, 2 losses to Missouri. Didn't play Georgia or Kentucky that I noticed.

I think they needed a black guy cause Tee isn’t a candidate and they are starting to take heat for it.

Sumlin isn’t really an option. Just like Gundy wasn’t. JMO.

Sumlin would be great for that locker room. One thing about TX is its just hard for anyone there to have a dominant defense. He got it about as close as you can last year with aggressive turnover fixing defense. They still gave up lots of yds and pts. That's just TX football. Boys hit hard. Muschamp, Diaz and others have struggled to have shut down defenses in that area. You can do that at TN. I assume he would bring Chavis as DC

Chavis seems to coach at the level of his defensive talent. Good when he's got great talent. Not so good otherwise.

That may seem obvious, but the fact that he's been able to acquire that talent in his career is a factor.

Still, I think there are better options, but Chief's a good dude.

I cringe even today every time I hear the word "Mustang" even in a Ford commercial. We all have our favorite 3rd and Chavis plays.

For about a decade he was really a really great DC. But once great coaches see your stuff for that long, they are going to figure out your weaknesses.
