In what's been an unbelievable week of twists and turns in Tennessee's search for a new head coach, Thursday tools another wild turn.
N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren confirmed to Volquest.com this afternoon that he is staying in Raleigh.
On Wednesday, Tennessee officials, including former head coach Phillip Fulmer, met with Doeren to discuss the possibility of the Tennessee job.
It's unclear how serious the Doeren disucssions became. Doeren was business as usual in his office in today, according to sources. Doeren and his staff had a recruiting meeting mid-morning and Doeren is set to have an in-home visit tonight with 4-star linebacker Peyton Wilson.
With Doeren no longer a factor in Tennessee's search, the million dollar question is where does John Currie & Co. turn now. On Tuesday, Currie discussed the job with SMU head coach Chad Morris, who remains interested.
Also, Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is another name that has had discussions with some in and around the Tennessee program. Steele and Currie have had at least one phone conversation during this search.
Other possible names that could emerge in the search are former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin, and former LSU head coach Les Miles, who sources close to Miles have told Volquest that he is interested in the job.
It remains unclear if Tee Martin will emerge as a candidate. Could Tennessee keep Brady Hoke? Could they wait and see what happens with an NFL coach in January?
At this point given the last six days anything could be possible.
