Official Jon Gruden Thread XLV

Back several weeks ago, before the Board of Trustees meeting, part of the Grumor narrative was the “deal” to once again have the AD under the President in exchange for increased University funding. It’s apparent that didn’t happen.

Whether it’s Gruden, Gundy, Kelly, Morris....whoever, there are significant “controls” put on our head coach that makes this an undesirable job, despite it outward appearance. Til those controls are gone, this is what it program will be.

Sorry to quote my own post, but....

This is also why we will always be able to pay 4-5mil for a “yes man.” It’s clearly now a bargain at 40-50% what the University is actually able to afford.

Currie isn't going anywhere any time soon it appears. If so, it'll be as a fall guy. The old guard is winning if not has already won. The masses are going to be nullified and pacified and apathy resumes until it's football season and the seats are full again and no one will ever care.

I've said it before, I've not donated one penny to UT for a very long time, and it looks like I will continue to do so. The derailment of the University from 200-2001 and on has been terrible.

The only true hope was Ergen, and his position. He is the only one who if he wanted, could battle the Haslam's outside the walls of UT if he desired and took it personally enough to invest the time, resources, and money needed to cut these people off.

If I were Ergen, and was the person I am, I would have spent over 100 million, because honestly, that is about what it would take, and would have had the Haslam's moved out of state.

I'd hire and employ the best 3 PR and marketing firms and would run a campaign about removing their names from everything and I would have written a check to them to do so and would have flooded the media in the state to make sure people began to think like I needed them to. PUBLIC OUTCRY. IT works, it moves the needle. Plus, the Haslam's would be remiss not to take my money because see point # 2.

Then I'd have hired the best team, of former investigators from all backgrounds and gone after Pilot and done what the FBI can't, pay money, real money to whistleblowers, who in the corny line making them an offer they couldn't refuse. You bury their money and company and you bury the devil.

But, that's just me. And if I had the billions Ergen has, I would have made my moves to publicly denigrate the family so much by public sentiment and then gone after their company to make sure their power is gone. Maybe someone can go back and see if the Haslam's had any workings with the Butcher's. At this point, too sad to care anymore.

I am really down this morning and it really has nothing to do with Gruden. It's just become painfully obvious that we have fired a clown and will most likely end up with another one. My fandom is on life support but I will stick to my word and hang in there until the next coach is officially announced.

What baffles me is the complete and utter randomness to the search here. You have an open checkbook (allegedly) and the best you can come up with is a Schiano with all the other names out there that were way higher on the radar? Not in any universe we know of.

Then you go to Cutcliff. Reasonable coach and orange blood. He wants no part of the dumpster fire.

Then to Gundy. A coach which would likely be in many AD's top ten lists even if he does seem rooted in Stillwater. Nope, he's Cowboy for life.

Now on to Chad Morris?

Where is the offer to Les Miles, Mike Norvell, David Shaw, Chris Petersen, Scott Frost and it even pains me to say Lane Kiffin? Hell even Scott Satterfield and Bryan Harsen have a better record than Chad Morris. No Todd Monken?

Currie's list is like throwing a dart at a picture of every FBS coach out there. It's random and completely unprecedented for an AD of a P5 school to be this thoroughly incompetent.

Was talking to a friend who relayed a conversation he had with a current AD at a non power 5 school.

Said, “Currie’s actions display gross incompetence and insures zero confidence in his abilities going forward.”

We aren’t just saying it. Others are saying it too.

Then why isn’t there a vote of no confidence?

The only chance (I agree it's getting slim) to prevent further disaster is to keep the pressure on the admin. Now is not the time to relinquish the momentum gained on Sunday.

This... if we let up, nothing will happen. I'm not sure we can change it, and I know it seems like nothing is happening. Firing Currie will take time though. Tennessee isn't going to have a knee jerk reaction after Sunday and cause more media attention. Haslams have been in charge a long time. It will take a long time to balance the power. Keep up the pressure. At the very least we will know we tried.

I am continuing to contact Joe and Bev. Don’t know if it will do any good, but if enough proud alumni speak out, at the very least, our voices are heard. It may not change anything now, but it may down the road.

Here is my form letter. Just change the salutation in the paragraph near the bottom to address it to whomever you see fit:

Good Morning,

I hope this message finds you well.

Add me to the list of Alumni who will not spend a dime in support of Tennessee until AD John Currie is removed from his position. I am mortified by the handling of our once proud university. It is clear that Mr. Currie cannot sell the prestige and tradition of this university. For $7 million a year, Tennessee should be attracting an elite leader for our football program. When Coach Gundy turned us down, even after nearly doubling his salary, it became clear that the leadership at this university (be it by name or by monetary influence from “boosters”) is disasterous at best.

Mr. DiPietro, you have the opportunity to play the hero in this story, or you will be held culpable by association. Fire John Currie, dam the influence from the Haslam family, name Philip Fulmer interim AD, and together hire a caretaker of Tennessee football that will put us back in our rightful place as a top 10 university athletics program.

Until such a time, expect minimal support from fans, both in attendance and in donations, and harsh words from national media.

Make Tennessee Proud,

Haslam Sucks
We want Blackburn

So separate from all the coaching and Currie questions, how can Jimmy Haslam be allowed to remain as a powerful booster after confessing to fraud and agreeing to pay $92 million in fines and $85 million in restitution?

Yes, I know, it's chump change. Yes, I know Gov Bill is chair of BoT.

It's just this question: aren't there some sort of requirements for bigtime boosters?

It’s random because his approved list has to be approved by the man he makes tea for...

I am miserable. Miserable. But it gives me comfort to see so many other people that feel the exact same way I do.

I just heard a call on FSN where the caller had to hang up abruptly because he was it was apparent in his voice he was on the verge of losing it and almost started crying.

Never. Never did I EVER, could I ever imagine Tennessee would be here, but I am so lost, I don't even know where 'here' is.

If Gruden goes to the Browns, I swear the last bit of my sanity will go along with him.

But it wouldn’t shock me

No kidding. Gruden as HC and Peyton as GM. I remember rumors alluding to that.

Would be the ultimate betrayal. I’ve been cooter kicked so many times over the last few days, but that one would do me in for sure.

It just tells me that the idiot had no plan beyond Schiano.

Now that I've had more time to digest getting kicked in the balls multiple times, the only path through this for UT fans is a removal of Currie and staff and a clean slate so to speak. There is no coach in the country that's even remotely interested in coming here at the moment while he is at the helm. At least not one worthy of the Tennessee brand.

We have to have a redo right now. Currie is bouncing around from different coaches like a superball and has to be stopped. From Schiano to Cut to Gundy and now to Morris? Enough of the clown show. Period. End of story.

Get him the hell out and put in an interim. Start fresh.

100% agree. Anything short of this results in a severely divided fan base, apathy sets in, and Tennessee football is nothing for the next 5-10 years. Like others who have posted here, for as long as I can remember I've wrapped my fall fun up in TN Orange and have always looked forward to football season. Seeing that the administration really doesn't give a rat because the money still rolls in......I'll be out. I don't know that I'll ever be back. I quit baseball in '94, I'm out on the NFL this year, and UT may be next. Sad day all around.

Because we are letting a guy who owns the worlds worst professional sports team and is headed for prison to run the athletic department.

Then why the hell have a president chancellor or otherwise?

If it’s this bad from top to bottom I don’t blame coaches for using us like a cheap hooker.

It’s commendable they don’t hang up laughing

Yes, that the check clears.

If Haslam installed Currie, and the other boosters did not agree, why has it taken this long for them to be calling for their head? I suppose them trying to get Gruden in and forcing UT's hand could have been a way to do this, but we have no concrete evidence of any of it. I feel like things should have been put out there long before Sunday. If I'm worth billions, and I donate substantially to something, I would not be afraid to piss someone off for what's better for the cause. Why does it seem like all the other big boosters are afraid to step up to the plate?

I hope this thread dies soon and i never hear the name Gruden again. HE aint coming he never was coming and he never will . This has damaged us getting a coach from the very beginning . No coach wants to be the second choice . all the gruden people need to help us by letting this go. Sorry this is the first negative post i have posted on this thread but its time to get over this for good.
