While I agree finding the right head coach is of extreme importance, I believe there are several candidates out there that could be considered a good fit for our program. I think the thing that is of probably equal importance is, who will compromise the staff of the incoming coach. Will he surround himself with quality coaches that will get the most outta their players & put them in a position to succeed? Im not so concerned if we hire someone w/ a proven track record as a HC or if we hire someone who is currently a coordinator provided they surround themselves w/ quality assistants. As weve seen recently, OC, DC & other assistants can make or break you.
Example:
1.) lets say the Vols hire Tee Martin to coach & he brings with him a staff full of Robert Gillespie quality assistants
Vs
2.) the Vols hire Gundy & he brings a staff consisting of assistants that are equivocal to his current defensive coordinator
In my eyes, scenario 1 has us in a far better position. It boils down to how proud is the head guy? Does he feel he has to be the smartest man in the room, that its his way or the highway? Or is he wise enough to say hey, there are others out there who know more about particular position work than I do & I wasnt their knowledge & expertise in this program.
Just food for thought... not endorsing one candidate or another; simply something thats been on my mind for a few weeks now.
