I think it is more likely that the Halsmas realize how badly they screwed this all up and this is there attempt to right their wrong by going out and trying to hire an actual good proven coach by throwing a ridiculous amount of money his way.

What is your dad hearing?

We just tried to sneak in Greg Schiano and we’re seriously being picky about Mike Gundy. Quit feeding the Narrative guys. Lol

If the hire was Bill Belichek, there'd still be a number of vocal posters who would claim he'd be a bad hire since he couldn't bring Brady with him.

This could have as much to do with Bill Haslam as anything.

Dude is toast if the Haslam family screws up yet another hire of this magnitude. They would be known as the family that killed Tennessee football. Everything good they did for the academic side--tarnished.

And Bill is the one with the political career. He would be persona non-grata in the state, guilty by association. Vastly overpaying Mike Gundy is nothing if it means saving face for the family.

Gundy has had some DAMN good teams and no Championship to show. Maybe it is time for a change of scenery.

I would cart wheel in the streets of Nashville.

Letting it be reported that you are offering $8.4m/year is the first time Bahama John has looked competent in this search. That’s big enough bait to draw attention from anybody who would actually be interested in coming.

Reported 8.4 so all these coaches who were defending GS are now saying

“Greg Schiano deserved that ish”

Hire Gundy at 8+. Next year another school interviews him and we bump him and an extension. Have to fire him after a couple poor season's. His buyout, like 30-40 million.

How about this.....We partner with Gundy to help him get a raise and to publicly put out that we are offering a lot of money. Other coaches will take notice and the phones start lighting up. All while we never intended to hire Gundy for that amount of money in the first place

The genius of publicizing this offer (if legit—or even if not) is that if Petersen would come to UT for $8m, he will call Bahama John now.

That's what I meant by buying luck. Suddenly, UT's phone is ringing with agents saying, "Hey, my guy's interested at $8, $7.5, $6, whatever." No options become more options.

UT will be a case study soon. However it ends up, this has been revolutionary.

Possible, but also equally possible the Haslams are scrambling to save face.

They don't live in a hidden lair at the top of Mount Le Conte. They have to live and work in public. Their incompetence was on full display on Sunday. They want to make it right, IMO.

Their incompetence has been on display. Nobody has had enough spine to bow up on them until now.

Very good points.

More details, coaches actually being interviewed, Currie has 3rd party break the news to Schiano, no public PC after the fact, Hubbs says Currie didnt do anything yesterday.

I know, Haslams and iron grip and all but is it possible the mutiny against the Haslams has worked? Or at least loosened the grip some?

I think Currie may actually have been doing something yesterday. It's my understanding that a group of boosters decended on Knoxville yesterday and hell was following close behind them.
