Biggest issue...Why was Greg S the best we could get?

Per Currie, "I have followed Coach Schiano’s accomplishments throughout his career and have been fortunate to get to know him and his family over the last several years."

If this statement is true, then Currie has prob been keeping Schiano in his back pocket (so to say).......waiting for a moment like this.

If that is true, then Currie never made a "real" coaching search........and never even gauged the interest or reaction of Vol players, boosters, former players, or fans......which is stupid. If he had "his guy" at least make sure it will go over with people who matter in the state and in the program..........then they can at least try to sell the fans on it...........and at least try to explain away the fan's concerns about Greg as a coach, as a person, and any possible character issues.

Currie told everyone he was looking for someone of the highest integrity........and when Vol fans found out who that person was........many of us were shocked......because we didn't see Greg as "that" person.

I still don't understand why this idiot was even considered. Had to google him because I have never heard of him. If he was such a great coach why is he a co-defensive coordinator and not a head coach some where. His record at Rutgers and NFL was not that great and He had a bad loosing record against big ten schools. So what would he know about coaching in the SEC?

They were trying to scoot buy on an avg SEC salary so they could throw $300 million at stadium renovations.

To extract more profits from $300,000,000 in construction contracts, it helps to get a few "yes men" in place.

I think that he was the top target the entire time personally. Currie played haslams card and screwed the pooch, now he's in real trouble.

He's not. He's always been Currie's first and top choice. There are much better options but Currie was dead set on Schiano for some damn reason.

Seeing a ton of this in this thread. My question for all of you is this: do we know this is true? Are we sure? Has it been credibly reported or is it just a convenient truth that allows us to THINK we are still able to attract top-tier or even upper middle-tier names?

Is it true that Haslam wanted to bypass every clearly better candidate out there to land on like the 30th best candidate (if that)? Is it true that our reported "efforts" to hire Jon Gruden, Dan Mullen, Scott Frost and others were smokescreens to make it look like they were trying and cared?

Or is this us as fans (myself included) insisting that our program is something it's not? Do we need to face the music? Are we sure we're as great as we think we are?

Someone educate me on this. I am not attempting to argue with anyone. I also still want to believe we're a top 15 or 20 job in the country. But are we sure we haven't just been turned down by everyone?

First, Schiano wasn't a 3rd rate coach. Second, I don't think anyone here, myself included, can claim to know how Currie conducted this coaching search. But some of us are hellbent on acting like we know. "It was the Haslams!" "It was Currie!" "It was all a Gruden smoke screen!" "There was never any search!" "They ignored this coach." "They never reached out to that coach." Yeah. Whole lot of that going around.

Not 3rd rate? How come he is not on anyone else's list?

He was Currie first pick. He got his man. Now schiano is suing for Currie backing out.

Is this what we are now? We can only attract 3rd rate coaches? Now how do we get a step down from that? What's going on with our program?

Schiano was not my first choice, but the guy has a good track record for producing winners at the college level. He had South Florida and Rutgers in the top 5 at one time. That shows that the guy can coach. He was also highly regarded by Belicheck and Meyer. Sometimes, all you can do is get the best guy available to you at the time.

No. we hired the wrong AD who was looking out for a friend instead of doing a search and interviewing real candidates. he said so in his monday letter

I'm not a fan of Colin Cowherd, but he put it perfectly:

Herd w/Colin Cowherd (@TheHerd) on Twitter

The SEC is becoming toxic for coaches. The expectations aren't just high, they're damn near unattainable. Why do you think Chip Kelly took the UCLA job? The Florida job is MILES better.

Mark Richt is the perfect recent example of the toxicity he alluded to. 145-51 as Georgia's head coach, and never missed a bowl game. Fired after going 10-4, 12-2, 8-5, 10-3, 9-3 in his last 5 seasons. That's ludicrous.

Obviously Georgia got lucky and ended up with a good one in Kirby Smart, assuming he isn't just winning with the cabinet full of talent Richt left.

We'll never know, but I would love to find out how many coaches said no before Schiano, assuming he wasn't just a Haslam shoe-in, which it appears he may have been.

He also said Schiano was a good coach, not a great coach but good enough for Tennessee.

He's the epitome of a empty talking head

You don't know whose lists he might have been on. I don't know whose lists he might have been on, either. None of us know. We're not the people with those lists.

If you had to Google him you're another one of the clueless tn fans that just set us back 10 years maybe.

Aaron Hernandez also was highly regarded by Urban Meyer and Belicheck.

One ranked season ever. In a down Big East that lost Miami and VT.

I wouldn't call 68-67 "producing winners."

Got as high as 7th and crapped the bed the next week vs Cincinnati.

Never coached at USF.

Stop lying about his resume.

He was never the best guy available and is a garbage bag juice coach.
