Official Jon Gruden Thread XLIII

It's a lot harder to fire someone, these days, than I think people realize. Will he be reprimanded? Absolutely! But fired, I highly doubt it.

Hey, I could be wrong (and I wouldn't be disappointed in the least, if I was).

One thing is for sure;

Today proves that VolNation and all the VFL's have a voice! I'm so grateful to be a part of this awesome family!

Certainly his actions can be seen as detrimental to the university, no? If the right folks agree to it, he will be gone. No need to overcomplicate it.

Anyone been able to separate the pretenders from the contenders as far as those that have real inside information on VN? Would like to know who called the Schiano hire and who kept telling us Gruden was a done deal.

Here is what I think, and I’m going to use a political example because I think it’s easier for people to visualize. Please don’t mistake this for any sort of political pundantry.

Clinton won the popular vote but lost the election. Clinton’s polling numbers predicted a relatively nice win for her, and when she lost it was shocking to many pollsters because they had her ahead by about 3%. The problem is the national polling didnt effectively account for the electoral college, but it did accurately reflect the popular will. One always has to remember, the national popular vote doesn’t matter, only the distribution of the votes that effect the electoral college.

That said...

Our “insiders” are like the pollsters. They have access to information that looks very favorable to a specific outcome. The information is largely correct and deciminated in good faith. The problem is, just as the previous Gruden mania, that they didn’t have access to an understanding of the electoral college. In our case the electoral college is apparently Haslam. It is, if the story is to believed, irrelevant what everyone else wants if he doesn’t agree.

I’ve always been skeptical of these sources, not because I didn’t belief the people who were sharing the info were doing so in good faith (well at least most of them) but because after 2012 it was apparent that we didn’t have access to the sources that matter. And, much of our information this time seemed to have originated from similar sources as last time.

As I’ve said before, people making decisions at the highest levels don’t freely desiminate information as that information is highly coveted for its value. And, if you’re getting free information that would seem to have value, you aren’t the intended recipient but the product. By that I mean that you are being used to attempt to influence those that are making the decisions, in one way or another. That seems to be the case here, and Beaver is the perfect example of that type of wielding of influence. In fact, if memory serves, Beaver even stated as much once when he said “I’m sent to influence” or similar.

I say all this to remind those who want to direct anger at our “insiders” that this is not their fault. Any anger at the lack of Gruden is our own collective doing as we didn’t understand how to effectively parse and weigh information. It should serve to remind us that handling information requires a level of caution relative to confidence in the veracity of said information.

There are those that bit fully, and are evidently suffering some severe let down or remorse associated with reality not matching their desires. If enough of those people get together and create enough noise, it is detrimental to the fan base as a whole as our already precarious reputation takes another hit as we seem to irrationally spin off into orbit when viewed from the outside.

Going forward we need to just be more careful with information and each other. I have no doubt some trying times are ahead but the Volunteer handle wasn’t earned by people who were afraid of risk or a challenge. The name Volunteer was earned by those who were willing to give their all for a larger cause regardless of the price.

No, but many are lumping her into the same bucket as Haslam/Currie. Point is, she could have been complicit but wasn't. Folks should focus energy on the right enemies.

Speaking of complict...lets share a lot of that blame on the backs of Peyton Manning and Phil Fullmer. They can't crawl out of Haslam's pocket long enough to apologize for their greed.

You seem like someone that could have connections. You debunked the CCC rumor.

Is there anything you have heard that could shed some insight into the last few weeks?

The Haslam's have contributed closer to 50 times your 5,000,000 number to the University, their contributions are beyond athletics. They gave around 50 million dollars in 2006-2007 alone. There's a reason the business school is named after them.

TY, that puts it in perspective. Still think the fans could make a sizable dent, but that's a mountain to overcome for sure.

He was. This today had nothing to do with Gruden. There's a reason Wallace and Brice were reporting Haslam was allowing Gruden to use his plane after the Georgia game, because it was true. It was also true in 2012.

This is the fall out of Gruden not taking the job. I was told then and it appears abundantly clear now that there was major disagreement about whom would be hired if the top option turned the job down. We saw that playing out today.

I am not the only one who heard it this way. Boro, AV and others did as well. I wasn't even told it was Gruden this time but that it was a very high profile candidate that everyone wanted. I just assumed it was Gruden and the Brice/Wallace stuff confirmed that.

That would mean JG turned us down before 2 weeks ago? According to reports they went after schiano a while back. I'm not being argumentative...It's just crazy to go from Jon Gruden to Schiano. Taking the psu stuff out of it, he's just not that impressive.

Hearing Brohm was contacted tonight. If so, someone better jump in or we will have another MOU signed before we can his butt. What the actual hell is going on?

Agreed. WBIR just had Rucker on 20 minutes ago and he said since the Schiano stuff multiple coaches had been contacted tonight.

Get Currie out of the AD immediately!

Basically what legendary said. It's a mess but it has been exposed for what it is and we can save it. Currie will be gone.

Many of you won't care, but this is the latest from Beaver:

Nope. Don't care. Beaver has consistently over-exaggerated his role in this and misled everyone on here to believe Gruden was a done deal six weeks ago.

If he's lurking (and I suspect he is) he's more than capable of setting the record straight. He may play golf at the Honors and know his scotch, but for damn sure he is not connected in the right spots within the UT AD.

No more riddles and cryptic messages.

Could be wrong, but I think he's talking about fundraising among the other big donors.

That's how I read it. Replace the money that Haslam had committed by other boosters. If things are as toxic between the boosters as it seems then getting a disgruntled booster to pony up if Haslam is gone won't be an issue

Local media was reporting the Schiano name a few days ago. Of course no one believed it.

Yeah, it’s some House of Cards crap. I really want to know what happened in the time frame of the last 10 days or so. Something went down.

Seems pretty obvious Haslam is still trying to pull the strings and he is used to unfettered control. Where he got pushback he tried to go commando but someone pulled the e-brake.

That's how all this feels like it went down. Crazy day, and one of the most embarrassing days in Tennessee history, funny how yesterday seems like a distant memory now huh?

At this point we shouldn't hire a coach until Currie is fired, unless he can perform a Gruden miracle. And even then I would fire him after Gruden was signed and hire Blackburn. But at this point, just fire Currie NOW!

I agree.

And for those who keep asking about Atlanta Vol, I would venture a guess that he's been extremely busy today.
