Recruiting Forum Football Talk XLVII

Don't forget Hubbs and LWS had people they trust tell them that Gruden was a real possibility and was almost a done deal. Now maybe the FF Gruden "insiders" were trolls, but that doesn't mean Gruden wasn't really in play.

He was in play a few weeks ago but he shot us down. That Dennis Dodd article a few weeks ago was us ending that pursuit. Surprised people didn’t see it that way but that’s exactly what it was.

Currie is shell shock he failed to land Gruden or Mullen though. He has no plan from here. He knows as much about where this ends as we do at this point. He’s toast.

He would have been absolutely dead in the water recruiting here. The PSU stuff doesn't stick as much when he's just a coordinator. But as head coach? He's toast. Especially in the South.

Oh, I agree completely. They also apparently did not know about the sealed testimony when he was hired at OSU. Might have been hard to fire him at that point, but it is real easy not to hire him at this point (well, it would have been...).

We'll never know how close we were. Maybe Gruden just kept raising the bar. I hope he get the NFL job he wants because I'd say he's burned his bridge here.

I don’t think it was ever a possibility for one reason. I think Currie/haslam had their guy from day one, I have no inside knowledge of that, just seems that Currie never had any plans to conduct a search.

Why did Currie let this Gruden stuff go on and on without quashing it? He smirked at his press conference and appeared to never try to stop it. For there to be a Gruden article on CBS hours before you hire Schiano is insane.

This is what I don't understand. You call up a Gruden and tell his agent to release a statement to make it stop. Just incompetence. I am at a loss.

It’s just simple emotional bias.

They don’t want Schiano to be coach, so the hearsay about him must be true.

AJ Johnson was an awesome player, so the accusations against him aren’t.

And before someone lambasts me. I’m very much against a Schiano hire. Read JAVE’s post, we 100% agree.

But that is the thing. AJs still hasn't been proven but the University couldn't take the PR hit of him playing another game. You can't do that then hire this guy.

Unpopular opinion forthcoming.

I do not nor did not at anytime want Greg Schiano as our football coach. That is because of on and off field things that I have serious concerns about. I don’t believe him to be a fit or someone I want representing the University of Tennessee.

That being said, the way his name and character over the Penn State stuff have been portrayed today is not right. Those people who jump on other people for not immediately calling Schiano someone who “covers up child rape” or “enables sexual predators” is wrong and shameful. It’s the world we live in today though. We hear something and just run with it.

Reading up on stuff the last hour or so, I don’t believe Schiano had any knowledge and was not even at Penn State at the time these horrendous things were going on. I don’t think any reasonable person would think different, either. It’s just not logical when presented with the facts and knowledge surrounding the case.

Hate Schiano because he’s not a good enough football coach to represent our university. Hate him because he’s a douchebag to his players. Hate him because he’s an apparent egomaniac that rubs people the wrong way. But hating him over the Penn State stuff and saying he enables child molesters is bull**** though. It’s just not reasonable to believe. It’s the “twitter mob” mentality we have as a society today and it’s wrong. No one deserves that.

Rant over. Flame away (and probably now call me a supporter of child molestation for whatever reason)

Sorry for buying the Grumors and pushing it so hard here guys. My bad. All of this sucks. Still can’t believe what has unfolded today. Hopefully it works out in the end.

:hi:

I was there with you too. Nothing wrong with hoping for the best.

This all does beg the question with AM and others still open is who now?

Venables?
Tee?

We were down to Schiano apparently so we must need to go even further down the list

So Sandusky had many many accusers and the first incident happened in 1998 and Greg Schiano left Penn state in 1995.....................

What an awful thing we did today. Just shameful.

I’ve only seen Herbstreit act like it is just sour grapes. Media in general seems to be pretty adamant the protests are about his relationship with Penn State.

So many articles being published right now about how stupid our fanbase is. Google it and you will see.

Not a problem. Some clues definitely pointed in that direction just a bit.

You nailed it in your original rant back in January. Currie was the Haslams' man from the start. And he was hired specifically to hire Greg Schiano per the wishes of Jimmy Haslam.

Then he can pay any compensation from his own pocket

I mostly agree with you, but he was absolutely at Penn state under Sandusky. It's not unreasonable or unfair to suspect he knew something because he worked for the guy, but it is unfair to state he enables child rape. That's too serious an accusation to make without evidence.

But that is the thing. AJs still hasn't been proven but the University couldn't take the PR hit of him playing another game. You can't do that then hire this guy.

You are 100% correct, But that isn’t what we were discussing.

You are talking about why he shouldn’t be hired, which everyone agrees with.

I was talking about how it is irresponsible to call the man guilty.

You don't need to apologize bro! Gruden would have helped the program immensely and any fan who wouldn't want that is crazy in my opinion. Currie should have shut them down.
