Referencing your post above I think something big did happen last week but that Gruden rejected the offer leading to the Dodd article, which served as a face-saving statement from the AD (we didn’t want him anyway). Gruden’s Rocky Top statement was just a simple joke - him having fun with the rumors. I really think the whole thing is completely dead.

I think Currie is waiting to interview some sitting coaches. I no longer think we get Mullen - I agree he’s looking for a raise. I think we get a reasonably well regarded up and comer again.

That’s my take on this.

Same. I think Mullen is still possible, but it seems this thing ends with Campbell, Taggart or Morris.

Sure, but in my opinion we're already at the tail end of a week of negotiations you mentioned. They've been talking to Mullen for two weeks at least. Maybe longer since it's Sexton. That's why I'm saying if you sit down with him it's probably done. I don't think it got to this point with Mullen with Florida, Penn State or Oregon.

You'd know better than I, but the only coach we sat down with in 2012 was Strong, right? And he agreed to a deal. Then he went home and Louisville paid him enough to make him stay.

Mullen did supposedly interview for the Miami job in 2015 and there were reports that he would interview at Penn State but don’t know if he actually did.

You know how many believe that they'll believe Gruden is the coach when he walks to the podium? That's the way I am when it comes to the UTAD hiring an "A" list coach. I'll believe it when I see it.

My point was that UT can try to hire an "A" list coach all day, but it isn't just about money. There are many other factors.

See McElwain at UF, Oregeron at LSU, and Helton at USC.

I disagree about the importance of the Hubbs post, but in any case, the noise about Gruden has completely died. If we actually had him locked up, it would only continue to grow. This fantasizing about Gruden is fine if that’s what you want to do, but I think we all need to be prepared for a $4m hire.

Has the noise completely died? I don’t think so. Just because it has slacked off some since all of the booms last Wed and Thurs doesn’t mean anything. It’s slacked off because false info is being put out on a bunch of other names to turn everyone's attention elsewhere. It’s worked.

Hmm. Respectfully disagree. I think the AD has tried to kill it through the media, by telling select people it isn’t happening (e.g., Hyams; Dodd). The only noise now is from anonymous sources. I think those sources are mostly just fanning the flames as a joke or to try and pressure tre AD to give it one last look. But I’m convinced it is completely dead.

Franklin got breaks at Penn State? What did their roster look like when he took over?

Bill O’Brien weathered the Sandusky storm like a boss. Left a good framework of talent. Hackenburg was impressive with O’Brien...tanked under Franklin...and the scholarship limits affected OL depth, but they had talent. As someone else stated, Moorehead saved Franklin.

Here is the thing,

It is clear that there are some big boosters/people in the AD that are leaking out that Jon Gruden is going to be the next coach at Tennessee. LWS, Hubbs, WNML, VFL, formers players all have heard this. what I just can't make sense of is why on earth do you leak out something like that unless it is true. It's definitely not some type of smokescreen, I mean who would Jon Gruden be a smokescreen for? Definitely not Mehllen.

I just don't see any benefit of leaking out information that Jon Gruden will be the next coach of Tennessee when he really isn't going to be. 1)You upset the fanbase when it doesn't happen, 2)you make that actual hire more of a disappointment because it doesn't end up being Gruden, 3)you make Gruden hated in Knoxville by making him look like a troll.

I wonder if when he signed middle of last week and all the smoke was at its peak, everyone started leaking it because they thought we would go ahead and announce it. Maybe Hubbs thought the same. Then, they found out Gruden didn’t want it announced yet, because of his respect for the current coaches and the team. So everyone had to backtrack and calm the storm.

Who are the 2 people that when they say something we pretty much take it as done? Hubbs and LWS. They both said they were texted saying it was a done deal, and both of them have still not said it’s a no go.

Almost 100% believe it is. The things that really stand out making me think it’s done is:
All the smoke last Wed/Thursday suggesting something huge happened.

Hubbs posting about the text he received stating it was a done deal...7 years, $71 million. Hubbs doesn’t do that stuff usually.

Hubbs still has not shot down that Gruden is a no go.

LWS posting in this same time period saying he received word it was a done deal, but he still won’t believe that Gruden wants to coach in college. He’s basically a podium guy.

LWS is not shot down that Gruden is a no go, yet he did say a while ago that Gruden has said no twice. Makes me think this was the negotiation phases where we made an offer, Gruden said no and countered. I think there was a 3rd offer that had everything Gruden wanted, and I think that’s when AV said last Wed was a pivotal day. It was the day Gruden said no and walked for good or the day he signed. Based on all the smoke, he signed.

Gruden camp or UTAD has not denied anything. I’m pretty sure by this point in the game in 2012, Lamonte made the statement that Gruden has no interest in coaching.

Now, we are hearing all of these names that come up one day and then drop a couple days later. On top of that most of these names are underwhelming, which doesn’t fit what Currie said he would hire...big, expensive, explosive. The big names we think about get thrown out there, but then it’s said they are wanting raises or aren’t really interested. Makes me think all of this is to continue buying time until the season ends, which has worked. Look at us in here...talking about all of these names, and trying to justify hiring them. Only a few continue to believe Gruden is already locked up. The misinformation campaign has worked.

No one wants to listen, but it was mentioned by Bubba or beaver that some of the incentives for Gruden would not be seen in the contract or his salary. Enter all of a sudden we may be buying a new plane for recruiting. Also, enter the home he apparently “purchased” that was not on the market from a Haslam. I will let Involuntary give his thought about the home, if he so chooses. I think he may be onto something with his idea.

The only thing that doesn’t make me think 100% it’s done is Currie’s MO of hiring someone without anyone knowing. Many know or think they know about Gruden. So, I keep wondering if maybe Currie has an equivalent size whale landed and can use Gruden as a smokescreen...maybe Peterson or John Harbaugh. I’m interested to see how it all plays out. Just don’t trot out Coach Noname.

Sorry for the long post.

Sounds like your daughter is telling YOU the bedtime stories.

Didn't you get your username by falling for the Gruden stuff the first time?

Not really. I used the OG to identify my as the original babyavi, although I did get that idea for the original Grudenites. However, yes, I thought we would get him the last time. I didn’t fully realize the dumpster fire we had at the time, and how dysfunctional the administration and boosters were. Plus, I can’t help but try to be optimistic when it comes to my alma mater. I think things are at a completely different level than they were in 2012.

Bass....so if Gruden came....we would instantly have a top 3 class?!?! Lol ok....recruiting is the only thing about the college game that he hates...it's literally the one thing that he doesn't want to do....but he's gonna come in here and get a top 3 class the first year? Even though he will be behind the 8 ball with early signing period?

Ok.

Also...he's not coming here...when he coaches again it will be NFL.

I don’t know if he would recruit top 3 for 2018, but he would for 2019. Every kid on the country watches him on ESPN, Gruden’s QB camp. He wouldn’t have to do that much but make a few phone calls and hire a good staff and recruiting would take care of itself. Butch has to work 24 hours in recruiting because nobody knew who he was. Gruden is a rock star

I respect that. Everyone is seeing things differently. I will continue to believe that Currie has landed a trophy until he trots out a cull.
