John Harbaugh (Ravens) reportedly reached out to UT with interest in this job.

this would be ridiculous.

Tennessee does not need to be in the supporting cast of the "harbaugh brothers" coaching story.

besides, think about this.

this next hire could be the most important in Vols football history and it has to be not just a good coach --- it damn sure has to be the RIGHT coach.

John Harbaugh does not fit at UT.

What do you call the last 10 years? It's been dark a good while with a few hints of light in '15 and '16.

Oh hey someone Ive never seen here before. Thanks for your input. My post was a follow up on many posts Ive made here before.

Thanks for playing.

I think it's time to bring Kiffen back. We would be in a better place if he hadn't left. He made a mistake and it hurt us both. Let him come back and fix the mess he created.

Many times, over the years. Any time there's an unrealistic fan base expectation, smart ADs immediately quash them and get the fan base pointed in a more realistic direction.

It's called expectation management, and it happens all the time, in all walks of life. Including the sports world.

An example?

No begging going on. Contract is in hand now and is what it is. Gruden just needs to put ink to paper to finalize. Currie being in the Bahamas with B Ball team tells me he's sure he has his guy now, otherwise the assistants AD or some other smuck would be there. Football runs the AD dept. and is the #1 priority.

Soon!

:loco:

I agree I do not think he would be going with the basketball team if a coach wasn't in place.

Gruden was never coming, and if we don’t get a coach like Mullen it will be much worse haha. You guys need a dose of reality. We will be finishing our worst season in history come Saturday and Currie will announce someone much worse than Mullen sometime after that.

You need a dose of reality. GTFO! Haha.

In the words of Clay Travis: Dan Mullen is 33-38 in the SEC in his career. And eight of those wins are Kentucky. So he’s 25-37 in the SEC minus Kentucky.

He is not splashy enough to back up a $300+ million stadium reno

James Franklin went 11-13 and was in the SEC East. So Mullen has a better SEC winning percentage than Franklin. Would you take Franklin? Or he is also not "splashy" enough?

For the record, I'm all on the Gruden train. Just making the point.

I mean, does it make a difference if I say I'm not giving him a chance? If I call Currie and say "No, I don't want this one" do you think he would fire him and start over?

I have no choice but to give them a chance. At the end of the day, my opinion means nothing.

We could bring back Dooley and there would be nothing I could do about it... But if we brought him back and he won a National Championship in year 1, I would probably get back on board with him.

I'm talking about the vocal backlash, and the threats to never donate another dollar, buy another piece of merchandise, or attend another game if Coach X is hired.

Sure, you have a choice. You can either give the next hire a chance to win you over, or you can choose to ignore the product and wash your hands of it like some are pseudo-threatening to do. You absolutely have a choice. No one is forcing you to be a Tennessee fan.

Can you explain why he doesn't fit at Tennessee?

Currie said the next time you hear from him will be when he makes a hire and I would not expect him to go back on that. With all the flirting and teasing I think any news should come from Gruden or through his agent by proxy. Jmo.

Agreed, Currie can't let a certain element of the fanbase dictate to him to make statements every time they need to feel better about themselves..

If he did that would be a sign, IMO, that he's not the right guy for the job..

It may not in reality end up being Gruden, but I WILL NOT support a Mullen, Norvell, Campbell, Frost, Durkin type hire.

I. Won't. Do. It.

Sorry, I will reignite the apathy that the dismissal of Butch quenched, and move forward being just a football fan. I love my University, this City, and this State, but will not support what I feel to be another half-effort at hiring a lackluster coach.

They need to understand, the longer it takes to make a move to return us to some type of prominence, the longer it will take to garner the type of fan-support they desire.

Sorry for the self-important, overwrought personal rant. This is the last I'll say on the matter....it doesn't have to be my choice of coach, but it better be worthy.

Adios

If the next HC isn't Jon Gruden, the most important attribute the next HC must have is thick skin. Thick skin to survive in the Knoxville fishbowl. Thick skin to survive in the SEC fishbowl. Thick skin to survive not being Jon Gruden. That probably eliminates many of these supposed candidates, IMO, leaving the following:

John Harbaugh
Mike Gundy
Chip Kelly
Jimbo Fisher
Les Miles
Gary Patterson
Lane Kiffin

Out of that pool, who are the realistic options? I'm not asking who we like or want, but which of those might actually come to Tennessee.

Realistic options from that list would be Les Miles IMO.
Harbaugh is not available until January. Gundy, even though he is currently in a rift with AD, is home. He's where he wants to be. Kelly will probably go to UCLA. I think he wants to avoid being in a conference with a dominant coach. He wants to be THE alpha coach. Jimbo isn't leaving FSU unless he just needs to get away from his family situation and thinks a fresh start is what he needs. But his time with kids will suffer. Patterson is just angling for a raise. Lane is looking to jump to the NFL as an OC. Which would be the best thing he could do.

The backtracking begins.

When...ever in 2017 have I said Gruden was coming? I've been very careful to measure what I post in order not to attract the attention of people JUST LIKE YOU.

I have based my opinion on what I've heard from the SAME people that told me about the meeting after the Georgia game that sealed Butch's fate.

I've not predicted who the coach will be, only enjoyed this thread for like-minded individuals. I'm not backtracking...I feel exactly the same as I have since September.

BTW...taking that quote completely out of context is bush league, and exactly what I would have expected out of you.

Come on Boro, we are TENNESSEE!! As a fan, it is our duty to support our beloved vols, regardless who the coach is. We may not like it, but we have to respect it or the only thing that will suffer is the University. If we as a fan base aren’t the most supportive and enthusiastic in all of football then we are only hurting ourselves when the time comes, for yet another hire. Nearly every presser that introduces a new college football coach, the new coach always talks about the “great fans” of that particular team. No matter who the coach is...WE SHALL ALWAYS SUPPORT!!
Boro cured me of my Mullin thoughts. I have now Come to believe in a homerun or I will hope from afar. No more jumping on to the next coach's bandwagon because someone I have no faith in tells me to. That trust has been broken. Jmo
