Yeah...that reasoning worked great with the last two coaches we hired.

Edit: Sorry if that came off snarky...didn't mean to. Just my opinion.

No problem, it's VN...I'm used to snarky. :)

That said, the last two hires had only proven that, for Dooley...he had a name and a losing record, and for Butch...that he could win in lower-tier conferences.

Mullen has at least shown an ability to be competitive in the SEC at a school with bottom-4 resources. Give him top-4 resources, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him become more competitive.

Not saying he's the best candidate, but bottom line is this, if isn't Gruden, 90% of this fanbase is gonna be disappointed. No one can replace him in their minds. The idea that people won't donate another dollar or watch another game if Mullen is hired is silly and reactionary. We could do much worse if he is the choice. He isn't the grand slam, but he isn't Dooley or Butch either. The guy has done more with less than any current coach in the SEC.

It may not in reality end up being Gruden, but I WILL NOT support a Mullen, Norvell, Campbell, Frost, Durkin type hire.

I. Won't. Do. It.

Sorry, I will reignite the apathy that the dismissal of Butch quenched, and move forward being just a football fan. I love my University, this City, and this State, but will not support what I feel to be another half-effort at hiring a lackluster coach.

They need to understand, the longer it takes to make a move to return us to some type of prominence, the longer it will take to garner the type of fan-support they desire.

Sorry for the self-important, overwrought personal rant. This is the last I'll say on the matter....it doesn't have to be my choice of coach, but it better be worthy.

Come on Boro, we are TENNESSEE!! As a fan, it is our duty to support our beloved vols, regardless who the coach is. We may not like it, but we have to respect it or the only thing that will suffer is the University. If we as a fan base aren’t the most supportive and enthusiastic in all of football then we are only hurting ourselves when the time comes, for yet another hire. Nearly every presser that introduces a new college football coach, the new coach always talks about the “great fans” of that particular team. No matter who the coach is...WE SHALL ALWAYS SUPPORT!!

I would not be upset with either of those either. It has been a long time since we have had a real coach. Kiffin has grown and Les is a very good football coach.

And to clarify again I am not "Full Mullen" but I do think he is one of the better options not named Gruden, again.

I know you not. You are just passing along the info, trust me not harm intended.

If it's not the Gru, the only 2 names that excite me are Jim Harbaugh and Gary Patterson.

If it's anyone else, we might as well have kept Butch.

I think Currie understands his job is about more than football, even though it is the cash cow of the university. He has to support hoops too.

But let's be real, the tournament is not in SFD (no offense) or Kodak (is that better?), it's in the dang Bahamas! And as AD what exactly do you HAVE to do before a basketball game? You just show up to your nice seats, right? But the rest of the time you are killing it on the beach.

So it's not like it's some drudgery following the BB team to the Bahamas IMHO.

There are coaches that will not disappoint me, and who I could wholeheartedly support without reservation. Dullen does not even cast a shadow on that list.

Gruden to UT would be so much fun, but I think there are other very good candidates that are just as likely to succeed as Gruden. If Gruden comes out and says no this, it doesn't spell the end. A good hire will happen, and on the Third Saturday in October 2019 the Vols will initiate the decline of Nick Saban.

:dance2:

You sound like me when we hired Butch. I'm done with that crap. Gruden or bust.

This is probably the best smokescreen ever. Some people are so obsessed with the Gruden stuff that it let's Currie operate in secret.

So he's using Gruden as a smokescreen to keep us off the trail of his no-name Google candidate? Boy that should go over well... He'll look like a real genius when he has most of the fan base expecting Gruden and he rolls out Matt Campbell and people have to get out their phones to know who he is. Surprise!!!

This is what I don’t think the AD fully understands. After every bad hire, fans are losing more and more trust in the AD and are willing to give less and less time to coaches before we are fed up with the results. If they don’t hire a big name/ good coach this time, that coach will start with an unhappy fan base out the gate. There is no wiggle room anymore to see what a coach can or can’t do coming from a lower tier program. We are out of patience....and rightfully so.

Ultimately, the fan base, yourself included I believe, will support any coach who wins and wins at the level that the fan base expects.

I think that what you are saying is that you and many others will not initially support a Dan Mullen type. But, if he wins?

It goes the other way too. There's a handful of names that would garner a great deal of initial support with Gruden being at the top of that list, but if he or anyone else doesn't win, he'll lose support pretty quickly.

Nick Saban, Urban Meyer. etc. were all "just a guy" before they proved that they are a lot more than "just a guy." While I understand that for every "just a guy" out there that approaches Saban/Meyer there's probably a 100 that will stay "just a guy," there is at least some chance you catch lightning in a bottle.

At the end of the day, there is a risk associated with with any coaching hire. I don't envy Currie with this task.

Said the same about Butch at Cincinnati.

"Imagine what he could do with Tennessee's resources"

5 years later: 0-6 in the SEC, fired mid season

It's a big jump from the Big East to the SEC East. Mullen has 9 years of mostly successful experience in the SEC West.

Apple's and oranges comparison, but I respect your skepticism.

Current list of coaches and I cannot get behind
1. Dan Mullen
2. Greg Schiano
3. Mike Norvell
4. PJ Fleck
5. Les Miles
6. Any current DC not named Venables
7. Anyone from FCS
8. Mike Bobo
9. Mike Macintrye
10. Coach McGoogle

You forgot 11) Coach Ned McFartweed from Northeast South Dakota State

Agree with all of these for a "not behind financially commitment wise."

So you can get behind Venables but not Mullen? Absolutely laughable.

I do not follow anyone blindly. I have no "duty" to follow something I disagree with. Neither do you.

Furthermore....if we don't get this hire right, the next one won't matter.

Agree with Patterson. Frost could be that next rock star but you are rolling the dice

Frost is going back to Nebraska. Patterson is getting a raise and staying put.

If it isn't Gruden, I think we the fans will be shocked at the name. For better or worse. I think it will be someone we did not expect even though it is a well known name.
