I would not at ALL be surprised to hear something in the next 48 hours putting the Gruden talk to rest and tempering the expectations of the fan base that are convinced he is coming and setting the stage for the actual hire. Some will love it, some will hate it but that is true with any hire. I know of at least one recruits dad who has been told, directly from "Dr. Currie" as he said, a hire will be announced on or before December 10th (probably before) and to not listen to the Gruden talk in the media and that we will be getting a top notch coach that knows how to win in the SEC. (Didn't say the name but sounds a LOT like Dan Mullen)
The AD knows what is going on and hears all the call ins and the fact you cannot hear the word Tennessee mentioned in a broadcast without the mention of Gruden. It has reached a level of belief that has taken on a life of its own. The LAST thing they want is for recruits to be expecting a hire that looks like it is not going to come to fruition.
At this point they know they have to address it as an official hire draws near imo. They cannot announce Mullen (Most likely imo), Patterson (possible but not super likely) or Norvell (vomit, not likely I HOPE) without first tempering fan expectations.
Sure....but it's not happening.
Besides, do we really want to give the job to somebody that hasn't been a long term, successful coordinator and has never been a HC...even if they used to wear Pantone 151?
Coasty! Paging Coasty! If you are here, could you give me a brief synopsis of the BS I'm reading right now?
Enjoy reading alternative view points, but serious questions..
If we have the ability, and are likely to pay SERIOUS money to our next head coach and staff, are we really prepared to spend 6+M for Mullen? Seems 6M or more could get you so much more.
Also, why even mention the likes of Norvell? I guess the way I feel is either we are swinging a big stick or we aren't. Not sure why the discussion always goes to the bottom of the barrel so quickly.....
FTR - I am 100% Gruden until Currie tells me otherwise.
I guess the university of Tennessee should be able to control the thoughts and opinions of the fan base? Its not like the university has done anything to make the fans think its Gruden and only Gruden. The AD said he wasn't going to say anything until the hire is made and that's exactly the way it should be. His job isn't to shoot down every ridiculous rumor that comes out. Just saying.
Disagree, respectfully. This thought that Gruden is the only person that can bring UT back to relevance among a large portion of the fan base can and probably has had adverse effect on the search process imo
Patterson yes, a HUGE yes. Not sure if the smoke about him contacting UT is real but I hope it is.
Peterman threw 5 interceptions in the first half this weekend, not sure we want him. (LOL jk) Peterson is not reality imo but would be irresponsible not to contact him
Franklin is another huge YES for me but very unattainable. He is where he wants to be
Harbaugh is another unknown asset but not largely realistic imo.
Sure I would take ANY of these over Mullen but I am speaking in terms of who I think would be a long term success AND are attainable for us at this time.
Sorry brother.... Some seem to think that Gruden will say no today and are on the cliff edge again because they bought into the idea that would hear this week one way or the other.... I am unsure of this ..
BCarter believes that Mullen is the man.... I have been told by my source that if it was not Gruden it would probably be Mullen?? tifwiw
I have seen nothing, heard nothing nor do I believe that anything is going on except this is a major hire and will take some time to iron out all the details ... I have zero reason to believe that Gruden has said NO!
Most people have NO idea at all... hope this helps
