Official Gruden Thread 39

I'm here....everything is eerily quiet. I have nothing to express, and no reason to not be RELAXED.

I'm still very confident, as I have been since late September, that Butch Jones will not return as Head Coach for the 2018 season. That is my prediction , and I stand by it.

I'm finally beginning to believe you might be right.

Will any person in the history of time eat more crow than Jimmy will have to if this actually happens? I have almost started wanting this to happen more for that reason than for Ut football

If it happens people should call up daily and ask him who he thinks the next coach at Tennessee will be

The only piece of information that has me holding out any sliver of hope at this point is the following:
Within a few hours of UCLA firing their coach, we heard they were sending caravans out to meet with Kelly.

Within a couple days of Florida's opening, national media started pointing towards Frost and Kelly, and the visits have been out there and known.

Pretty much every search ever had a list of officials meeting with coaches.

All we have out of Knoxville is we've met with Gruden. Mullen is mentioned, but that's more likely because Jimmy is obviously involved here. Otherwise nothing. Nothing has been confirmed or even denied by the media, just pure speculation.

So either Currie is running the tightest ship to ever float, or those meetings are just not happening.

I respect you as a poster bcarter but to compare Franklin and Mullen is way out there. Franklin had Vanderbilt playing at a level that was unheard of for them and beating their rivals. He made Vanderbilt a threat. I don't think many teams are scared of MSU.

I don't mean to be rude, but do you watch college football? MSU is the Vandy of the West. Before Mullen, it was unheard of for them to beat the likes of Bama. Most everyone knows they'll have a hard fight with them right now.

Is it wrong that I hope jimmy chokes on a crow bone? Yeah I thought so too. Going back to lurking.

Interesting

I still believe!

And BC, I don't post much either for some of the same reasons you mentioned. Hard for me to contribute with some of the negativity that comes out on a message board, especially when I don't have much specific info to share. This particular thread has been my favorite since joining VolNation, however, cause there are some good folks in here and real conversation at times, not to mention a lot of uplifting moments like AV giving away tickets, people genuinely worried about Charlie, or others helping some maybe find employment.

I was not on any message boards in 2012, just talked to those around me. When I first stumbled upon the resurection of Gruden threads this time, I truly had no idea what I was getting myself into. But I quickly became hooked.

Through the highs and lows of this roller coaster ride we are all on, I have found that I am adjusting to the chaos of Grudenmania better than I would have imagined. I have to step away from the thread occassionally (apart from work and sleep) to clear my head, but I keep coming back. This season has sucked, but hope for the future, via this thread, has salvaged some of what I have missed most during the beloved college football season this year . . . the camaraderie of Vol fans on game days.

It is easier to believe we will continue to be mediocre with the outcome of this coaching search, but much more fulfilling, at least for me, to dream big. I am learning to keep the faith even without instant gratification. Good life lesson in that, probably for many of us, if we really think about it.

Gruden to the Hill for me until someone else is named!

Hope everyone has a blessed day!

Simply my opinion but I think this is closer than 99% of the alternate realities many are experiencing right now. I am a little underwhelmed BUT we could do a lot worse.

The one thing I am convinced of (but do NOT like) that my guy told me is If it is not Gruden, it will be Mullen !

I am still 50% Gruden and still believe at this point but confirming your post

To summarize a logic train whose pieces have been mentioned several times here, just maybe not all together, a train that leads directly to Gruden on Rocky Top:

~ ~ ~

1. Expectation Management. "Don't get your hopes up," every parent has said at some point. Why? Because hopes and dreams grow stronger and more powerful with time. If a dream has to be squashed, better that it be done early. Currie just had a fan barking "Gruden" at him, like a lunatic. Think he's not aware of the destructive potential of the fan base's mood? And yet not a peep from the UT administration about expectation management. No nipping it in the bud, no heading it off at the pass, they seem content to let the excitement grow and uncertainty fester. Would you do that with your children, if you didn't already know that the toy they really want is in the attic waiting to be wrapped, or at the very least that you intend to buy it soon? CONCLUSION: Jon Gruden is still in play. Maybe a done deal, maybe not...but he's in play.

2. Build the Hype: Not only is UT leadership not managing expectations, they are encouraging them. Big, exciting and explosive indeed. We think you are going to be very happy. Who says these kinds of things, unless they are confident of their ability to deliver the goods? CONCLUSION: Jon Gruden is not only in play, he's a lock.

3. Don't do Anything: What? We are in Day 7 of post-Butch Tennessee, and Jon Currie doesn't seem to be doing very much. In fact, he and his 4th floor compatriots seem not to have done much since Thursday. They've basically been sitting on their haunches for the past four days. Why would they be doing that? Isn't an intense hunt for a new coach under way? Didn't Currie say this was going to be his entire focus until we get our guy? And he's...wait, what? He's thinking about spending a day or two in the Bahamas for a basketball tournament? Okay.... CONCLUSION: You only stop working when there's no more work to be done...we got our guy. Some guy. Does it have to be Gruden, though? Yes. See points 1 and 2.

~ ~ ~

So that's the logic train. You don't need "insider information" to see that train's path, or its destination. I respect Atlanta Vol and his insights, but you don't need them to reach a clear conclusion that Jon Gruden is a lock. Don't need Beav, don't need Bubba, don't need Tuesday, as much as I appreciate all these fellas. Don't need them.

Only need eyes and logic to see where we're going. Or more accurately, who's coming to Knoxville.

Remember the charts that show various ways people react to stress over time? The basket cases have long ago fled, unable to cope with the long Quiet Period. The freak-outs have recovered, and are now holding steady. It's the fade-out crowd's turn to have doubts, to begin falling apart. Continued stress without relief may be wearing them slowly down, until they lose hope.

Don't join them, and if you are one of them, fight it. Don't fade out on us.

Jon Gruden is coming. Logic proves it, and a press announcement within the next 7-8 days will confirm it. Just hold steady, friends.

I'm still holding on to my Tuesday after Vandy and mnf theory. Even if Gruden politely shuts it down, I don't think it's over. Currie is gonna be the hero (or the zero).

Now, if this thing drags on into mid December like some have stated, I'll lose hope. It still might be Gruden, but I'll not have hope that it will be.

One thing is still a mystery.

Why did Gruden have to do the whole Rocky Top thing on the Seattle radio, it was either trolling and mean, or he was saying im coming home, kids.

I think he was just messing with the hosts of the show due to him telling them no to ask about the UT job.

Hey Boro welcome back! How's your son doing?

Any new info on your end? Is the gruden train coming to a stop or still rolling down the track waiting to see where it ends?

I don't have any Gruden info....haven't heard anything that changes my mind, or casts a shadow on anything. Things are very quiet...everybody on lockdown. I'm still relaxed.

Everybody needs to remember this wouldn't be like hiring Coach Joe B. Nobody from East Central State College. There are way more variables and moving parts. You're literally trying to hire a rockstar, we've only had a job opening for a week, and the season isn't over. Compare it to any other coaching search you've seen and see how it stacks up. It doesn't.

I don't mean to be rude, but do you watch college football? MSU is the Vandy of the West. Before Mullen, it was unheard of for them to beat the likes of Bama. Most everyone knows they'll have a hard fight with them right now.

What he has done there is really staggering. I do not have time to look up the stats but comparing his tenure at State vs. the previous years is eye opening. I read it somewhere not on the forum and not on SDS or any other hack sites. Was on ESPN or something. More 8 win seasons than from 1992 till he started or something like that. All from a school that recruits against and plays Alabama, Auburn, LSU and the rest of the West every year.

I understand the lack of excitement when compared to hiring Gruden but the total lack of respect for what he has done at State and what he could bring here is something I have a hard time understanding.

I am not saying he is a "done deal" by any means but in my mind he is one of the top 3 favorites in terms of "attainability and ability" and has the skills necessary to win here.

Praying MSU gives him everything he desires plus 10%.

He'll be an unmitigated disappointment here within 2 years.
