I agree with all of this. I'm pretty much a Mehlen guy. But it's starting to feel like ending up with someone substantially worse is a real possibility. Butch's egregious mismanagement of the team has once again made this job look like a total rebuild.

All things considered, taking a guy with a higher floor but lower ceiling is starting to look more appealing by the day.

I used to have this friend over for dinner from time to time. He used to tell me how awesome the food is. But he did tell me he wasn't so sure the food was all that good or if it took so long to get it that it made it taste that much better. We used to always eat late.

All things considered, if you could be guaranteed Mullen on Friday, or pass for the risk of hiring someone else (anywhere from Gruden to Mike Houston, no guarantee on time frame), do you take Mullen, or take the coach behind Door #1?

Yes, just leave the gloves and beanie in Starkville please

@ClayTravis: SEC records over the past six seasons: Kevin Sumlin 25-22, Dan Mullen 24-23. I know, I know, A&M is a better job than Mississippi State, but isn't it wild that Mullen is considered a top coaching target and A&M wants to fire Sumlin?

Six of Mullen's seasons have had conference records of .500 or less. Only 2 of his seasons have had Winning conference records. During that time, he's had two games playing opponents in the extremely weak east. Dan Mullen is a good coach. He's not a championship level coach. If you're ok with losses to FL and GA and Alabama every year, going to the outback, music city, and belk bowls, then he's your guy.

Weak. Mullen has won more SEC games in his first 8 years than the MSU had total wins during the prior 8 years. He went 2-6 once in conference and 3-5 three times. Those are his bad years AT MISSISSIPPI STATE during a period of unprecedented dominance by the SEC West. During that same time period, 3 SEC wins was our good years.

Doesn't Mullen leading Miss State to an Orange bowl make this bolded statement untrue? When was the last time Tennessee was in a big time bowl?

Hubbs still better at his job than all those guys. Don’t care if Rucker and Pat Brown have never misspelled a word in their lives.

Patrick Brown drives me up the wall with his how he’s always chewing gum in every single video. And his smirk. Take the big league chew out of your mouth you unprofessional prick.

Don't believe he would lose to all 3 every year, I believe he's too good at development and X's and O's for that.

But I very much question his championship caliber. Not going to spend another day arguing with those who think he is a championship coach. I don't see it and that's my opinion. Extremely good football mind but I've never seen a sign of that killer instinct it takes to reach the very top Helicopter **** he is not.

I'm not a huge Mullen fan, but nah.

Sumlin does less with more. Mullen does more with less.

I think I could get more excited about Sumlin. Maybe change of scenery does him well. He was all the damn craze when he was leaving Houston!

But neither will really have me jumping for joy

I will say that I don't like the idea that the football players who were contacted by Gruden and were all in are now saying it is over.

Seems like I've got to open my mind to someone else--

Does no one in the AD consider Chip Kelly? Then I'd say Frost (if he didn't want to Kiffin us) then Matt Campbell. I know Mullen but... I think I'd rather hire Gus in the East.

Yeah, but even his tenure at Houston was a little strange if you look at it. Had things moving in the right direction, then took a big step back in year 3.

They lost Keenum and his backup that year, so that might explain a few losses, but they really tanked.

That's just silly.

No, it isn't wild at all. It is apples and oranges.

Big league chew is pretty good tho. Too bad the flavor doesn't last long enough.

Yeah agreed. Plus all the QB transfers out of A&M seem bizarre.

SBNation has an article out on coaching vacancies. It says Taggart was offered the job by Ole Miss and turned it down. It also said Currie had met face-to-face with Gruden in a procedural move to satisfy boosters and fans. It said Mullen and Schiano are candidates. I’m sure it’s not all accurate so TIFWIW.
