Im convinced some fans are afraid of hiring a big name coach because they have become so comfortable with underachieving that the thought of being in the spotlight scares them. They are the same people who love to use phrases like young team and rebuilding year. Its easier to make excuses when you have a no-name coach to put the blame on. Blaming the coach has become their safe-space. If we have an elite coach, they dont have anywhere to run when things dont go our way. Owning up to a loss and admitting we got beat by a better team is too much for them to handle, so they are determined to hang on to their safe space where they can continue to avoid it.
