If that number is true then we better be going after Patterson and Petersen too. It would be crazy to offer a coach completely unproven on the college level that and not try with them.

I know a big part of our fanbase is all over Gruden's nuts, but no one really knows if he could win championships here. If we offered that much for Gruden, I'd say we made a big mistake when we hired our AD and we have idiots for boosters.

And I know Patterson is comfortable and Petersen is a west coast guy, but that is the type of money that annihilates barriers.

2. “How many college games has he won”
3. “He was just above 500 in nfl with players that weren’t his”
4. “He’s never recruited”

Edit: for the record I am talking about in your daily life when you bring up the coaching search in conversation with people. Not on this board. I don’t think we have many people on here that fall into 3 or 4.

I like our chancellor. At least she has interest enough to be liking a tweet on Gruden, instead of picking her nose.

3 and 4 is a hard choice.
1&2 at least have a possibly legitimate base. The misunderstanding of what he did in the NFL is annoying but believing Gruden wouldn't just recruit by being here is laughable.

Can’t decide between 2 and 4. Both strike me as ridiculous excuses.

The first part of your sentence negates every other point you made. The fanbase would go absolutely NUTS if we got Gruden. Absolutely no doubt in my mind money, recruits and national attention would flood into Knoxville on a scale we've never seen. Regardless of whether we win a title, it would show the world we're ready to play big boy college football and would set program up extremely well long-term. The effect would more than pay for itself. Just look at Bama. The AD and boosters apparently know this and are chasing it.

I just have insurmountable doubts that we'll get him in the end, in light of all the naysayers in the national media and the uncertainty about whether he really wants to coach college.

I still think we land on a good hire though. Fun to watch!

We'll see. If they hire him, and that's a big if, I'll support this team no matter what. If he's no better then 8-4 in a few years, I will rail on you Grudenites mercilessly. If he is the savior, I have no problem admitting I was wrong. I think it's a risky hire.

Forgot to add, if they don't hire him after you Grudenites were so sure, I will rail on you as well.
