The thing that didn't make sense was talking about too many hurdles...we had weeks to iron these out before wasting time to go to Tampa for final pitch. You don't go to make the final pitch with hurdles still in your way.

Comparing Jon Gruden to Urban Meyer is a stretch, imo.

We're only comparing the fact that you can't announce a new football coach while there are games left in the season and the only way to combat leaks that the new coach has agreed to a new contract is to put out a misinformation campaign saying that is false.

I don't know for a fact whether Gruden will or won't be the next head coach at Tennessee. What I do know is that there is no way this hype could continue for another 10 days. The story would have to be killed even if Gruden is actually signed and gonna be introduced as the new head coach after the season like Urban Meyer in 2011.

It's impossible for what has happened the last 2 nights to continue for another 10 nights. You had to know that reports of the deal being dead would surface.

On November 17, 2011, news broke that Urban Meyer had been hired at OSU. He came out and denied the report.

On November 28, it was announced that in fact he was going to be the coach at OSU.

I’ve held strong that if we go past Monday with Gruden, it’s not happening. But, the Meyer parallel is the closest thing we have to this type of hire.

I do think gruden turned us down for the final time last night. But.... what’s the saying? “Never say never about nothin”

Basically the same thing I'm saying.

If we're going off the assumption that a new coaching hire won't be announced until the end of the football season, then any news of a deal between Jon Gruden and Tennessee would have to be denied.

Both former coaches.
Both worked at ESPN while being courted.
Both said that the university courting them was a dream job.

IMO you can’t compare Urban and Gruden; but you can absolutely compare their situations. That was what the poster was getting at.

Hyams said the reports of boosters and Currie being in Tampa earlier this week to try to sway Gruden are utter nonsense. I'm rolling with Jimmy. It's not happening. Still holding out hope for Mullen or Frost.

What if Hyams depends on sources that have been locked down by the AD? All the anonymous message board posters don't have to put their names/reputations on the line, but if you are talking with the media, you can be outed, potentially. Seems to me the old-school media may just be handicapped in this.

I'm hardly the first to say this but I've been asked about it a ton. Jon Gruden will not be the HC at UT. Definitive no and we are moving on. There were always hurdles to hire him. We tried to go over, under and around those hurdles but it is not going to happen in the end. This is NOT a failure by UT administration. It just comes down to a guy that does not want to coach college football. There is no reason to be angry, downtrodden or depressed about this. There are very good football coaches who are interested in coming here. We need to celebrate that truth and get ready for the next opportunity to be a great football program again. I would also caution listening to anyone who claims AD sources in all of this. Any talk is coming from boosters and other coaches. Currie isn't leaking anything. That means that info is going to be hard to come by, even for the very best of journalists
