Until his agent calls it "fantasy" or Currie introduces Mike Bobo I'm not buying it being over.

That's fair.

I guess it comes down to whether or not you think it was ever realistic. And by that I mean, do you think Gruden ever thought internally that he would take a college job.

I know Tennessee tried very hard to convince him. But did he listen out of respect or because he really thought about it? That's what we don't know.

I just can't get past the idea that our reps have spent alot of time with this and took a trip down to Tampa without knowing the likely outcome. With JG having a son at the school and in laws nearby, the conversations had taken place about whether he would actually consider the job before all of this.

Also just heard from an arthrex med rep that his boss/company owner who is a higher up booster was in Tampa at some company meeting who saw Gruden while there said Gruden was openly talking about the Tennessee job. Didn’t say if he had taken the job just that he was talking about it. Not making this up at all. Thought it would make for good discussion. Tifwiw.

Here is the problem I have with all of this. Everyone ( except Hyamms) could be right. Gruden could have signed an MOU , changed his mind and said no, then got a visit Wednesday night and changed his mind and agreed, then changed his mind again after they all left and said No. I’m not saying 5hat is what happened but it is within the realm of possibility.

In the end we are all grasping at “insiders” information and I guarantee at least half the “insiders” are making up what they are saying.

We may not ever know exact that is happening even if he eventually stands at the podium and is our guy.

Were there any legitimate people suggesting he signed anything Wednesday night? I honestly haven't seen it. All I've seen was that they made the official offer.

I know we're all assuming Hubbs was at the airport to see if Gruden got off the plane but I don't think that's right. To me, he and Reed were there to see if any of the boosters got off the plane. So they would know if the trip down to Tampa was legit at all.

If he says NO nothing about this was respect to us.

The problem with this logic, of course is that, sure, maybe this looks a little like the lead-up to the Meyer hire. But you know what else it looks like? A lot of other searches where a candidate turned a school down... I mean, it’s one thing not to rule out Gruden based on tumbling that he turned the job down — it’s anotger thing altogether to interpret those rumblings as evidence that he accepted the job.

Maybe its just me but I took the "it's over he said yes" message from Wednesday night as truth. I took the reactions from VFLs on Twitter as truth. I also don't think Jon Gruden would go on Seattle radio yesterday and troll Vols fans after saying no once again.

If you believe the reports that he accepted Wednesday night. Then the reports coming out now that he said no should be expected.

There's no way this story can stay alive for another 10 days like it did on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. You had to know they would try to quiet the noise. Just like Meyer and Ohio State did in 2011 after reports leaked he signed the contract.

I have no reason to believe the reports Wednesday night that Gruden signed a contract to be the next head coach at the University of Tennessee were false. If I believe that and I know a new head coach won't be announced for another 10 days until the football season officially ends, then reports saying he backed out now shouldn't surprise me. They should be expected misinformation to quiet the noise until the official announcement is made 10 days from now.

What was weird yesterday is that the pilot plane showed up unexpectedly while they were waiting on that other plane.

Also the glare ruining the shot when the plane was classic! Like a Bigfoot video!

If he truly loves the University of Tennessee the way he says he does, he would not let it drag out this long to make the school he loves so much look so bad in the public eye.

I just have a hard time thinking they all convened in Tampa over the last few days trying to convince him to be the coach. He had to give them an indication that he would accept an offer if it met his expectations.

First of all, I am not an insider...nor am I even an experienced observer of all things football. I'm just a fan and this is an IMO type post. I think Gruden understands what he means to the university and I believe he likes UT. He certainly understands the collective hype that has built up for years now. I cannot believe that he would purposely toy with the Vol fandom's collective psyche and create any ill will. I don't think he needs to and he has called a halt to the process before when there was no hope. I also don't foresee a new AD allowing this sort of frenzy to build about a fictitious non-event. It would not help the university, his own reputation, job status and an actual coach hunt if there was actually one in progress evaluating other talents. Even though there is now a vacancy, there does not appear to be any active efforts to engage other potential candidates. Everyone knows the pending early signing date and what it would mean to lose this class. I think many other posters are correct. This is all disinformation attempting to mask that Gruden will be the new coach until it is the right time to actually reveal it...with the proper official fanfare.

I just don't think so. I think it was very much like a recruiting trip. They tried to get him to commit. What we don't know yet are the results.

It's Jon Gruden. You get all the power players together and make that trip even if you feel there's only a 1% chance.

If it's a done deal, you announce it. Need all the recruiting help we can get before signing day just over a month from now.

IMO the speculation hypes it enough since there will still be 3+ weeks left before the early signing period after the announcement. The assembled staff will be putting their recruits board together prior to it going down.

I agree with just about all of this. I am not convinced the VFL’s know anything though.
