Interesting

I'm optimistic, just gaurded in getting hopes to high on this.

Still don't understand the benefit for Gruden to actually do this.

But if he does and wants to get back into coaching? Watch the F out

When he answered he took a good 15 seconds to think about his answer, much like myself when I'm about to bs an answer in an interview.

Its pretty cruel of JG to lead Volnation on like this without a firm "no" in his response. He could easily just say "I love TN but I am not interested in coaching in college" or something like that. It immediately puts an end to it. Why didn't he just do this.

Because he's smart and will take full advantage of this situation if he can. Being "wanted" makes you valuable.

Didn’t he say “I’ve not talked to anybody”, and “I’m happy where I am”, and “I’m just trying to keep my job”. How do you get leading us on out of that?

2012 Response (YouTube video).

Transcript: "Uh, no there isn't. I should probably tell my wife that. But no there's no truth to that I'm just excited about Monday Night Football and getting ready for the Giants and the Redskins".

2017 Response (Twitter).

Transcript: "You know what Mike? I haven’t talked to anybody and all I really have in my life is my family and football. That’s about it. I am real sensitive to the coaches that are out there coaching so I don’t speculate. I just love football and I am trying to hang on to the job I have. I am very fortunate to be with the people I am with. I don’t know what is going to happen in the future. I just know this, I am going to continue giving my best effort to the game, stay prepared and I Love Monday Night Football. Don’t plan on leaving but as you know in life, “You never say never to nothing”.

Sounds a lot like I will give my all for Tennessee

I wanna believe, but I just didn’t take the stuff he said the same as most. I’m not a “smokescreen” guy, I learned not to fall for that. He may have answered wrong on purpose, but he didn’t say anything that could be considered evil and leading us on imo.

I've not talked to anybody could mean he hasn't talked to anyone about the situation in question. Not that he hadn't talked to anyone about a job.

Was the situation in question, in fact about the Tennessee job?

You have to remember he was talking on a ESPN show. If he said yes and the deal fell through how would effect his career there. It would be like announcing your new girlfriend at your wives family Thanksgiving.

I really understand that, I just didn’t take anything as leading us on.

We should all be beyond guarded.

I agree with you, he has zero to gain by going back into coaching, especially at the college level, especially at Tennessee. He’s making a ton of money, no pressure, he’s seen as a football God/guru right now.....his reputation can only be tarnished by coming to the pressure cooker that is Tennessee/SEC football. Why in God’s name would be want to subject himself to that?

Plus, if he is gonna get back into coaching, why in the world would he go the college coaching route? He’s an NFL guy, a football junkie, and the Nfl is where he can satisfy his addiction....not in college, where he’s dealing with the 20-hour per week rules, the constant recruiting, all the NCAA compliance crap, etc, etc.

Would love it, but just don’t see it happening.

Let me say I don't believe Gruden takes the job but what I do know is that he has been offered and talked to about it. Tennessee talked to him the last time there was a vacancy and have also reached out to him again. Hart confirmed that he reached out in the past and I can guarantee that there is zero chance in hell that Gruden visited Knoxville without being talked to about the position.

It's an impossible spot to be in to say that he's talking about taking the position on the air with his current employer. It's also not really possible to say that someone reached out to him while Butch was still employed by Tennessee. I still don't believe that he would take the job but I find it more impossible to believe that he hasn't been contacted than he hasn't talked to anyone about the job.

Successful head coaches are wired differently than the average human anyways. You never know what drives people or what new challenges they might want to take on. I don't believe he'll do it but I think Tennessee is the only college program he would ever consider and I think at his age it's a time where you have to evaluate if you want to get back into coaching or ride out the cushy analyst job. Tennessee can definitely make it worth his while in compensation if that's what he wants.

Gruden does a ton of football related stuff outside of Monday Night Football as well. QB camps, advising, coaches camps, etc. The guy has a passion for the game.

The fan in me absolutely agrees. On business side, if he can leverage ESPN or Tampa Bay, for example, then I understand. Just stinks if he has no intention whatsoever of coming to UT, and not helpful to the hiring process in the least bit.

You have to read between the lines here. He may not have been contacted but his agent or rep likely has. This is common so the main actor can say exactly what he did. Some people (Saban) will simply lie as they don't want to lose leverage or may have an NDA for the negotiation.

More likely is he is vetting his options and the more in demand he is the stronger his leverage at the stop he wants to make.

I don't see him coming and really don't know if he's the best solution but it would be a lot of fun and a big boost!

GBO!
