Official Jon Gruden Thread 34

As I stated yesterday...

Did Jon Gruden say he was not interested in being the next head coach at Tennessee?
If he didn’t, I see no reason for concern at this time.

Well I don't believe no one has contacted him. Damn near every media guy and insider here has at least said he was contacted.

So... Really nothing different than he has ever said about any job.

This is how ignorant you are of how all this stuff works lol. You honestly think talk in a thread on a message board has anything at all to do with the University conducting their search and all the work that goes with that, for a new head coach? You know what, you are right, we need to stop talking about Gruden and focus on realistic candidates because if we don't, we will miss an opportunity to hire someone...... From our couch.

Its amazing.

He mad.

It's the community in here telling others to GTFO and being rude just because everyone don't believe the same thing. It's a 2 watt street. I got no problems with you, your a good guy and always level headed. But some of these folks are just blatantly bat****

If you think that's the reason you are being met with hostility, then there is no help for you.

Deep down you guys know I’m right, you just hate hearing the truth.

Let me guess ... in your infinite football coach hiring , gator watching , “ fact based predictions “ , in your mind our ADIS going to walk up to the mic on December 19 after saying he will not hire a coach search firm and announce coach Cutcliffe as HC and PJ Fleck as assitanant HC right?

Who knows what is happening but the response about not having talked to anyone was not needed. If it is true that sucks. If not, he was at least a bit dishonest. That sucks too.

Get it done!

If you rub lemon juice over Jon's response to Mike Golic this morning, here's what OTHER bits are revealed:

"Well you know what Mike, I haven't talked to anybody (publicly), and all I really have in my life is, is my family (a lot of whom live around Knoxville) and football (which I heard they play in Knoxville). That's about it. And uh...I'm real sensitive to the coaches that are out there coaching (like interim coach Brady Hoke and the other nine guys with him who already seriously doubt they'll have a job two weeks from now), so I don't speculate. I just love football. I'm trying to hang on to the job I have (for a couple more weeks). I'm very fortunate to be with the people I'm, I'm with, uhhh (let me get this piece of paper so I can read the next part verbatim), I don't know what's gonna happen in the future (so that part I just said about hanging onto my current job, take that with a huge grain of salt, know what I mean?), I just know this: I'm gonna continue to give my best effort to the game (probably in Knoxville), stay prepared (because we haven't yet nailed down which day I'll be announced as the new head coach), and, uhh, I love Monday Night Football (it has been berry, berry good to me). Don't plan on leaving (as far as you know), but--as you know, in life you never say never to nothin' (unless it's making a major announcement at 7:00 am in the middle of the week; definitely saying never to that)."

Interesting, eh?

You guys are still fantasizing over something that WILL NOT happen.

Alll the while UF is about to lock up Chip Kelly and bury UT for good.

He's gonna get Currie fired with that "haven't been contacted" talk.

If it's true we need to start the fire Currie bandwagon now.

The major takeaways from Gruden's interview:

"I don't plan on leaving MNF but you never say never to nothing."

Also claimed "I haven't talked to anybody."

There are a few things though that need to be considered. First off, he has clearly spoken with people. When we have trusted media personnel, and I'm not talking "insiders" on message boards, but actual media members who stake their livelihood on reporting information, coming out and saying he has in fact spoken with individuals about putting together a staff, clearly that was a false statement. Why make that claim if not to simmer the fires and create some smoke? Second, his "Never say no to nothing" comment was clearly a cryptic response. Why? Well because, going back to my first answer, he has clearly spoken to people! This interview essentially bumped up my confidence. It didn't put me at 100% or anything like that, and I'm not anywhere close to 100% it's happening. BUT it did push me back from 50/50 where I was last night. I'm now in the 60/40 or 70/30 range that we at least have a good shot at it.

My thought is, either he's not interested in the job and has been stringing us along, or he's still in contract negotiations and that answer was pre-planned to put pressure on UTAD.

Always be willing to walk away from a negotiation. He may have been signalling a willingness to walk away from the table.

But at any rate, I think this morning should cool the idea that it's a done deal and they're just timing the announcement. I don't think the question is even asked if that's the case.

There is a whole big board out there to debate.

* In here, it's setup to be an echo chamber...
* Out there, people supported Butch when there was clear evidence years ago that he ****ing sucked
* In here, we desire for something better
* Out there, many people think we aren't an elite program and should accept 2nd tier
* In here, we know we are an elite historical program and should never accept 2nd tier

You aren't welcome in here, go post in another thread. We'll see you, and one of us will eat crow, when this search is over.

Now, GTFO.

If your answer to "will you be coaching?" is, "I haven't talked to anyone and am just trying to keep my ESPN gig", it would be ridiculous to follow that up by asking if he's getting a staff together.

Exactly, plus they are not going to ask “hard” questions. The exchange had more of a feel of old friends talking about the game Monday night, then asking what his plans are in the future. This wasn’t a press conference on the UT job.

He said what he needed to, and at the end of the day didn’t deny anything. I’m still optimistic, maybe more so now.

JG said he hadn’t talked to anyone; doesn’t mean his agent/team hasn’t talked to people on his behalf.
